Tergat's in great shape. But Tergat and Ramaala combined were offered less appearance fee than Ritz, so he's pissed, and may drop out as a result. Nothing makes sense in this sport, especially when ritz dnf's after trying to run a 4:20 mile 18.

Those that feel the New York Marathon is in the same league as Boston or London or Chicago are being influenced by the media.
Boston?
lohalloran said Tergat's wife just had another kid? What! Did he marry a goat?

plus Meb didn't need to be 100% to win the '04 oly trials.
He did not win the 2004 Oly trials.
Meb has never won ANY marathon.
whoops yeah i just realized that after i posted it. still he was with culpepper all the way to the end and he made it to the olympics on a few months of a abbreviated training.

Actually, it's precisely the sort of field you describe that could make for a lot of drama. Ritz and Sell pulling away from Tergat on First Avenue!
That will be tough seeing that Sell is running Chicago.
The investigative reporting Pulitzer Prize will ahve to wait, because it's been no secret to anyone that Nike's been doing "ambush promotion" at the race for the past 10 years, maybe longer, and it's pissed off a lot of victioms of it. And I doubt that you will be the one to enlighten Asics that they can enjoin Nike from doing it, because by now they surely would have if they could. It's weasely but not legally actionable.
I also heard from a person familiar with the situation that Amrstrong bailed on discussion to do ING NYCM last year b/c Nike didn't offer to ante up enough to Livestrong Foundation. If that's true, who's the bad guy there? Both? Neither? I don't know.
And where in my statement am I acting as an apologist? I'm not a fan of Armstrong. It's also well known in letsrun.com circles that I like many of the NYRR people but irrespective of that, I know that when a celebrity wants to comes to your event, you have 4 choices: (1) ignore him/her, (2) militate against him/her, or (4) use his/her celebrity as a lever for your own purposes (e.g., the mixed blessing of "Oprah's Book Club")
Sorry, guess I digressed. See you at the races.

Three is the best one!!
Oops -- only 3, not 4. sorry.
I would like to say that all New Yorkers are not as biased as Joe.
I just read the article linked on the Front Page about Dathan and just learned something else that I didn't know about the weakening of the field. Culpepper is recovering from anemia? It just keeps getting worse.
Dathan's proven to be extremely talented,'' said Culpepper, who's recovering from a bout with anemia.

New York Marathon has been billed to be not nearly as fast a field as Chicago but hey we got the guys with name recognition. As we are getting closer the bottom seems to be falling out.
Ramaala is healthy but seems to run poorly when put in a position of being the front runner so he needs some company to run a good race. This was witnessed in the Olympics when he twice tried to make a break alone.
Tergat pulls out of the Great North race which means that we will see a less than 100% Paul Tergat. We saw this last year and justified his sub par win as a "tough course". WRONG. He simply was not very fit. The course in no way cost him 5 minutes.
Baldini runs terrible at Great North but realizes that he may be able to beat an aging (5 minutes off of his best) Paul Tergat. Also past his prime.
Meb drops out of a half marathon this weekend with a bad hammy. Is not 100%.
Ritz will make it interesting considering there are no A marathoners on their A game in the race accept maybe a non leader like Ramaala.
Culpepper who has not proven that he is one step better than his first marathon in Chicago. I don't consider Sell an A marathoner yet and Sell is currently better than Culpepper.
This race appears to have all the excitement of an old timers game with a rookie pitching. Big time boring.

These were my comments prior to the marathon and after the marathon.......EVERYTHING WAS SPOT ON. There are several threads where Malmo and others talk about "With this great field, who would of expected these kind of results on a perfect day? or all of the experts thought that we were going to see 2 course records". I TOLD YOU WHY BEFORE.
