Boulami (sp?) tested positive a few years later right? And we all know about Dieter the cheater. I wonder if BK ever gets pissed about having those 2 finish ahead of him?

Woah badass site.
THIS IS THE BEST POST EVER
I have been watching it all day, the video of the 3000m WR by Komen, you have to watch over and over, it is unreal.
Today is the greatest day of my life. Who ever you are, I love you and I would like to father your children. Or atleast your daughters children. THANK YOU. I've been waiting a decade to see this race.
unless you are inspired to take up throwing scroll down halfway to get some track clips.
Perhaps this thread should be locked at the top of the message board?
Who am I???
Is it possible to download the video and then view it. If so, how do I do that? My internet connection is quite slow. Thank you.
That was not as cool as some of you guys made it out to be. He took the lead and then got hammered.
I said the same thing last month. Nobody here agreed with me.
http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?board=1&id=1446876&thread=1446672yes you right click on the link and select "Save Target As" and it will save it to your harddrive then you can watch it as many times as you like
Another great site. A pleasure to finally see Snell's 800m win in 1960, and to look again at Beamon's 8.90.

You have to take that moment in the context of the times.
Up until about 1990 there were several western or "caucausion" contenders. Then seemingly over night the floor fell out and a new era in distance running began. Kennedy was the sole whitey out there (ok and Dieter) that could even hang close.
In 1991 I ran several big road races and I was only a 28:30 hack but I could hang in some races and grab top 4 and the next year you see 12 Africans that look like freaks of nature show up and sweep top 10 in a lot of races.
Kennedy gets down to 13:03 when the WR is 12:55 and all of a sudden Geb blasts a 12:44. Grand Prix meets suddenly become 18 Africans and a couple of Westerners that place near the back. Runners of the day were intimidated if they were 5-10 135 lb guys when it looked as if genetics weren't in their favor any more.
I think the guys like MOttram and Webb and Teg don't know any different. Their era that they know was dominated from the start by Africans and they just keep pushing. In the 90's it was a little different. Westerners grew up seeing similar types succeed and all of a sudden it was a new day.
So Kennedy actually being a factor very late in the Olympics was a huge moment.
great perspective

He knew he didn't have the footspeed to outkick the Africans, so his only chance was to attack from 800 out and hope that their surging during the race had worn them out.
It was a smart move AND a ballsy move. He couldn't have run a smarter race.
smart, maybe. but not ballsy. ballsy would have been if he tried to run 13:00 and set the pace early. ballsy would be going with a mile to go. at that point, with 800 to go, it was his best chance of winning/medaling. but if he would have went earlier, perhaps his chances would have been better.
previously, without seeing the video until now, i had believed he made a half-assed move to the lead. now that i watched it, i'm more impressed. but i still think he knew he had no shot at winning/medaling. since that was the case, he might as well have made a move to get the crowd hyped...because that shit was dope.
fantastic site!!
only watched a couple of races but plan to work my through them over yhe next few eeks so would love to see this with the link locked on the top page as suggested.
1996 800m what a race!! Imagine if Kipketer had been running - either would have been one of the greatest shocks ever if Rodal had beat him (might well have done) or possibly a WR by Kipketer cos of the pace Gray laid down.
The only thing missing is the 1952 Steeplechase, Ashenfelters world record.
If you were there in 96, you would not have that irreverant attitude.
O.K. I wasn't there. I was in front of my TV watching it as it happened in 1996.
It was obvious that the 3 eventual medalists never had a doubt they would finish ahead of everyone else.
And I'm not being irreverant as much as brutally factual.
Kennedy was great. The Africans were greater.
Nice to watch Viren run 55.0 at Montreal 5k and emphatically outkick the kickers.
I used the same technique on Elliott's 1500 from 1960, and it worked!
