Re:
I wouldn't say Webb trains lightly, though I know what you mean. His mileage is low for a 10K runner, however his plyos, weights and other work is pretty intense. Seems from the outside he wasn't ready for the 10K like you say.

It was strange about that outstanding 10K performance. For someone who trains as lightly as Webb is alleged to do, I wonder if that race, which was an absolute killer in terms of effort, didn't do something to his body. Which led to his training getting messed up. As talented as he is, maybe that Cardinal 10K was something he was not prepared to do, despite the excellent result?
the "webb camp" has said they are trying to do some things like mottram has been doing which so far has included the cardinal 10000m and racing various distances and whatnot, however it seems webb does not do the mileage which contrasts what CG outlines in the below.
MR: I was going to ask about that. It seems like you’re ready to run good races at a variety of distances no matter what time of year it is.
CM: Yeah, I’m fit pretty much all year round. At the end of the European season, I rest a bit, but I still run every day, because I like going out for a run and I just like feeling fit. There’s no point in the year when I’m not fit or I’m putting on weight or anything like that.
Your observation that I’m in good shape for several distances throughout the year is because my aerobic fitness is good all year; the base is always there. The basic principle is a lot of running, longer reps and pace runs. There are maybe only six weeks in the year when I’m not at 150 to 170 kilometers for the week. I don’t go much below 140 kilometers a week even when racing in the European summer. Our year runs 12 months—we have commitments in the Australian summer, when it’s winter here. So I’m not someone who lets the volume drop much throughout the year.
qoutes from goucher and broe also seem to indicate they are training more like mottram as well. there was a thread a while ago that discussed how the recovery after the cardinal 10000 might have been the problem for webb. so looks like webb might be strong enough to race but not compete for a season. not sure when he is going to start being more like mottram that way. wasn't he going to run 800s next year?
