i would go, but i'm gonna go see modern life is war and outbreak in anaheim. =) hope he does it. three kids ran sub 4 in the late 60's. we should be having more and more every decade. american distance running needs to catch up with the rest of the world.

WITH THIS FIELD AND SEVERAL SUB 4 GUYS IN IT, PLUS RABBITS FOR A PACE SET UP FOR THE 1 2 AND 3 LAP TIMES, I CAN SEE AT LEAST A COUPLE OF GUYS UNDER 4. AND OF COURSE A J IS ONE. A PACE TO SET UP 3 FLAT AT THE BELL, 60 SEC. LAST LAP WITH ""JUST A LITTLE KICK" DOWN THE STREATCH AND WE ARE 3;59, - MAN THAT SOUNDS GOOD. 3 ANYTHNG. GOT TO SAY, I THINK IT WILL HAPPEN. J.
It won't count in my opinion. This is not a race ... it is a bunch of rabbits trying to pace one guy to a specific time. None of the other sub-4 high schoolers had people pacing 4:00-pace - they were in real races. Heck, Webb probably had pacers running sub-3:50 pace at Prefontaine. This is like the pacing groups at marathons - 2:50, 3:00, 3:10, etc. They were a specific pace on a race number on their back and all you have to do is ride them the entire way. If these guys would take off at 3:55-pace and Acosta tried to stay with them he would die.
The result does not matter. The best HS miler in the country this year is not running and it doesn't matter what time Acosta runs. He will not be number 1. "Free AJ" ... I wonder why Bolas is liked by everyone and Acosta is considered a conceited ass?

Didn't the article say he graduated from HS this year? If he graduated how can he still be considered a high schooler for the 4:00 mile record? Some kind of rult by the sanctioning body that allows this?

For the 8 billionth time you are considered a high schooler until the end of the August after you graduate high school.
it is the same deal in college, if anyone watched the usatf nationals 800 you would have heard the nick symmonds of div 3 willamette, broke his own division 3 record by 1.5 seconds when he came in second at the meet behind KD in 1:45.xx he graduated '06 so hes done but until preseason for xc begins under ncaa rules he still has the record so long as he was not sponsored which he was not because he entered unattached

Is that right? A full 1.5 seconds off of the 800m record?
That is like taking .2 (not .02) off the 100m record
The 800 record must have been soft because that is a HUGE jump for a national record.
Acosta is a great runner and has a fierce competitive edge from what I've seen. For 18 he has a good grip on reality from what I've read.
I really hope this kids heart can take him under 4, the situation might not be ideal, but people with a lot of grit usually like it less than ideal conditions.
Good luck Acosta, going big and putting your name out there like this is the kind of Attitude America needs to embrace.

Well if you look at it, symmonds set the D3 record earlier this year, and his new p.r. is the new D3 record. as for the record being weak, it is D3 after all.

AJ is in great shape, but I don't think he is in better shape than Solinsky was his senior year and Chris just broke 4 minutes for the first time this year. Didn't Solinksy run 4:04 and 8:43ish for 3200 as a senior? I put AJ at 4:02.8

You, my friend(sarcasm), are stupid and I hope you aren't a coach yourself. Thinking a kid, who to many is conceited, and having an opinion about him is not a bad thing and in no way qualifies someone as an ass. And really, the times being run by Americans are faster than in the 80's. Were people more competitive then? Maybe, but, thinking critically, maybe everyone else was just slower. So that argument is invalid.
Finally, this board is all about sharing opinions. In no way should everyone be forced to think that every kid is a good kid, and cheer for them. Just like your opinion is valid here, so is his.

No, they aren't. Take a look at the all-time top-10 U.S. performer's lists at the men's Olympic distance events (1500m-and-up). Now, subtract the "naturalized" citizens from the list...today's kids don't get credit for Lagat, for example.
You will find that the majority of the runners on those list still pre-date 1990!
