I'm a big fan of UK athletics, but it's certainly indicative of the extent to which quality has dropped that people are getting a hard-on over a few 1:45's.
Let's see some world rankings and major race wins before we conclude that this is anything but a pretty minor and inconsequential fluke race, producing decent, but not world-beating, times.
On the more optimistic side, the 8 is an event where a Brit has a chance to be best in the world and it wouldn't take too much. It's appalling to see the quality of international 800 meter running in the last few years. Consistent 1:45's and the occasional 1:44 wins most big races. Makes me wish I (I'm not actually Brian Hewson, of course), were running my best times now, instead of the mid-90's.
