Paul Tergat - Second greatest runner of all-time?

Tergat is not the Half-Marathon WRholder anymore, Wanjiru is.

...yes well..it is still safe to say that tergat is the greatest half-marathoner of all time....as of right now that is.

It's hard to believe but I have to think that as well. I heard Jos Hermans has been linked with drugs in the past - anyone know any more about this?

While Tergat (Mr. Silver medal) is an amazing runner, the best Kenya has ever had, I think you have to put Kenny B in the number two spot. Bekele has the 5k and 10k records already, an olympic gold (which Tergat does not have), and is bound to rack up more WC and Olympic medals. I'm also basing this decision on the very high probability that Geb will break the Marathon record, and in about 10 or 12 years Bekele will break Geb's marathon record. Granted, these are both assumptions, but I don't think either of them are outrageous.

P.S. When it is all said and done I think Bekele might be one of the best runners ever (better than Geb).

P.P.S. It would be nice if everyone would please refrain from mentioning Zapotek as one of the greatest runners ever, it's just plain silly.

...while i would agree with you about Bekele(reluctantly ill admit)...i sont see the high probabilty of of Halie setting the marathon record...thats a tougher mark than people know i think.....and while amsterdam was pretty impressive....it wasnt any faster than london ..4 years ago??...anyway..hes still a long ways from 2:05..

to be honest i dont think you could give anyone a high probability of seting the record....though id probably pick Rutto to someday better the mark..

It's not silly at all, Zato IS one of the greatest ever. Sure, the guys today are a lot faster, but that's going to be the case 60 years from now as well too. He revolutionized running as much or more than Geb and certainly more than Bekele, who's faster than Geb but really has made small improvements over Geb's times, while Geb took huge chunks out of the WRs. Bekele does add the cross country that Geb could never do though.

Zatopek is one of the greatest runners ever because he was such an incredible competitor.

Do you think Shaq is better than Bill Russell? I don't.

Zatopek was a great runner but not one of the greatest. How many times would Bekele lap him over 10,000 metres? I'm guessing more than twice.
