There has been scientific studies linking high mileage in teenagers years to athlete being prone to injuries after teenager years. There was a discussion about it in another thread concerning a girls team in NY. Yes there are numerous teenagers running high mileage but very few that are tackling the marathon with the talent of Samuel Wanjiru.

The goal of Samuel Wanjiru in the his marathon debut isn't just for experience he will be aiming to run fast and win as he does in most of his races. Just wondering if anyone see this as a potential problem and what is the MASS opinion on Samuel Wanjiru (undisputed Junior AOY) tackling the marathon?

Would love to hear from regular poster, WEJO, or anyone with knowledge and mature opinion that directs them to be FOR OR AGAINST teenagers and marathoning.

Back to running. there is another good runner from ER, who has run in the 5000.

I also think that er can make some good 1500 runners.

Your posts really make litte or no sense at all and have nothing to do with the topics. Over the last few weeks you all pick a thread and start personal conversations. Hey here's a great idea try starting a thread made for you all and seriously call it "not from Africa but I like to pretend I am".

Kenya isn't the most dominant nation on the track or marathon but they still have the most depth and as long as that is the case the have the capability to return to the top of distance running. All the Samuel Wanjiru's of Kenya need to recieve support that allow them to train and peak for Championships and not have to race to make a living.

2006 10K M we will see how kenians, kiprop and tadesse perform

Conventional wisdom has it that runners should wait until later in their careers before they become marathoners (although as always there are exceptions).... You only have to look at the birthdates of the athletes in this years IAAF top list....most born in the 1970's compared to relatively younger track athletes (most 1980's)

As a track fan, my preference would be to see Wanjiru compete on the track and on the country against the greats like Bekele on a regular basis (primarily from a spectator's point of view) ...Rather than run in a couple of marathons a year..... hopefully the experience he got from competing in front of 50,000 fans in the Brussels 10k will convince him not to go down the marathon route yet.... having said that, it would be very interesting to see how he did!!

2006 will be once agian ethiopian, kenyan and one ugandan.

i hope kiprop and wanjiru are in the same line inculding abebe dinkesa.

In 2006/2007 the Ethiopians will be strong no doubt about it; however, only one will be guaranteed to beat Boniface Kiprop and Samuel Wanjiru. Kenenisa Bekele currently has no equal in the 10000m and its his race to lose (creating major tactical error); whereas, the other top Ethiopians can be beaten by Boniface and Samuel. The likes of Sileshi, Abebe, little Geb will not give the 10000m races or medal to Kiprop or Wanjiru but to think they can't not take the Ethiopians (san Kenenisa) would be a mistake.

The 10000m event will be just as interesting on the women's side with Tirunesh Dibaba threatening the sub 30 minute barrier. The move of sub 4 minute 1500m runner Kutre Dulecha to the 1/2 marathon may be a prelude to her introduction to the track 10000m. If that happens she would be Ethiopia's second 1500m star to move to the 10000m-the other Gete Wami years ago.

Kenya have some amazing depth in distance running for both male and female juniors; however, somehow it doesn't get developed like the Ethiopians. When the Kenya Federation and its athletes come together and devise a plan to find and tunnel its talent towards the Championships it COULD once again dominate. Well it will be hard to find a runner to beat Tirnesh and Kenenisa in the 10000m from Kenya. The Kenya athletes have the talent to match other Ethiopians once its directed, developed, and focused on Championships and not just running for money.

Samuel Wanjiru, Augustine Choge, Veronica Wanjiru, Shelia Chepkiriru, and Benson Esho are a few of the talented young Kenyans that need to be developing with the thought of medals first and money second. Kenya should find a way to gather those athletes together, find a great coach, and pay for living and housing of those few athletes. If the superstars was really interested (ex: Paul Tergat and Catherine Ndereba) could get together with the Kenyan Federation and start the operation: Kenya Return.

The depth of distance running in Kenya is actually a double edged sword!!

Some of the problems that young Kenyan runners face are possibly due to the OVERsuccess of Kenyan athletics over the past thirty years and on the large numbers of world class athletes that actually emerge every year... If you have something precious, you tend to nurture it.... when you have too much of something, you tend to neglect it!...That seems to be the problem with Kenyan athletics and the governing federation!

The expectations of the Kenya public are also extremely high.... Anything apart from winning or gold is seen as a relative failure... The contrast to the amazing reception Ethiopian athletes receive when they return home from a championship, compared to the reception for returning Kenyan teams is stark....no wonder Kenyan athletes are less motivated to focus primarily on preparation for champioships! Ultimately life for some of the athletes can be very tough and you can't blame them for looking after number one.

I sometimes think that the difference in political environments plays a part as well.... Ethiopia has a (fairly) recent socialist-style political environment, where a sense of community is possibly more instilled, whereas Kenya is a pretty rough, tough capitalist-like environment where only the tough get ahead..... well that's my impression...it makes an interesting debating point at least!!

The plan to house, feed, and coach (with a top distance coach) some of the young talent is one way to attempt to combat the lure of financial temptation. Once Kenya return to winning like it did in the 80's and early 90's the rewards will come as marketing is picking up in athletics. The main enemy of Kenya's domination is Kenya Federation inability to adopt and try new ideas towards evolving and developing its young talent. Take away the need to run for money with its TOP JUNIORS and give them great coaching and see what happens after five years.
