IT WAS JUST LIKE LAST YEAR except 1st and 2nd were a lot closer and 3rd and 4th were even further away.

quote from page 122 of NCAA rules:
"Ties in team scoring shall not be broken, except for advancement to the championships finals."
so emory and rhodes officially tie.
The results show both as finishing first. But wasn't Rhodes announced as the winner at the meet? Or am I just imagining that?
no, they announced that. they should probably make another first place trophy/plaque and ship it to Atlanta.
Does that mean Tyler gets 2nd place and advances to nationals?
they reported it to their home town paper as a first place win. bastards! liers! just a bunch of overton park ben dovers.
ha ha!

no, i think it means tie for first, then tyler gets 3rd and needs an at large later today
Sounds like somebody is a little bitter about shitting the bed at Regionals/never making it to Nationals. Nothing like a little more underdog motivation from a loser.
With the new rule Rhodes won in a head-to-head comparison of each team's top 5.
Nick Lewis beat Vikran Srivastava - Rhodes 1, Emory 0
Alex Mahoney beat Paul Winterhalter - Rhodes, 2 Emory 0
Chris Moore beat Charlie Meade - Rhodes 3, Emory 0
Mark Handelman loses to Michael Rothbart - Rhodes 3, Emory 1
Lucas Warth loses to Tommy Fyffe - Rhodes 3, Emory 2
So, unlike the traditional 6th man decides the winner, Rhodes won.
Sorry to all of those who made the hilariously entertaining predictions early on. Gotta give those boys some credit. They always roll at the end of the season and I cannot wait to see how they do in MN next weekend.
With how close the race was (1 point separating 3 teams, technically), I would say UT-Tyler has a 75% chance of getting a bid, especially since they beat Rhodes at their home meet a month ago.
maybe you need to read the other posts ... or simply look at the results.
rhodes did not beat emory ... they tied for the regional championship. the tie breaker you noted is correct, but only in effect when qualifying spots are at stake. therefore, since two teams auto qualify anyway, no tie breaker, the tie remains, tied for the regional championship.
if they had tied for second, then the tie breaker would have gone into effect, and emory would be odd man out.
no at-large bids for the s/se
hmm...shocking.
because the south sucks
probably because of their blog...
Texas Lutheran (outside of San Antonio) is hosting the regional meet next year. From their website:
“Since submitting the bid to the NCAA to host the 2008 NCAA DIII South/Southeast Cross Country Regional Championships, the race course was changed to meet certain NCAA specifications,” said Patrick Zarate, TLU’s head coach for women’s cross country and women’s track and field. “The course is flat and fast with a few road crossings, and it is spectator friendly.”
UT Tyler should have gotten an at-large.
i can understand both arguments. yes, they were only one point out of a three-way tie for first, and frankly that sucks, especially because they looked really good all season, including beating up on Rhodes and at Chili Pepper.
however, they didn't have a lot going for them as far as other selection criteria. they got third (alibeit by a point) in by far the weakest region in the country, and it's becoming very clear that the south has to start performing better inter-regionally to earn at-large bids on a consistent basis. whether its rhodes/emory/centre going to UW-LAX or Pre-Nats or W&L/UMW/etc going to Paul Short and NYU, it's good that they're getting out there. UT-Tyler went to two non-championship meets out of state: Rhodes and Chili Pepper...not much of a chance to beat some teams from other regions.
i also think being a new team didn't help their cause. having a bad day at regionals is much tougher to explain when no one knows your history. for instance, if you had to choose between Tufts or Wartburg (two teams that have very solid histories of good performance) and the new guy on the block, I don't think UT-Tyler gets the benefit of the doubt. That's just a theory though.
Regardless of your position on UT-Tyler not getting an at-large, you've got to hand it to Rhodes & Emory and wish them luck on Saturday.

If anyone thinks the south should have gotten an at large bid, they haven't been looking at results. Rhodes was manhandled by Colorado College at their conference meet. Colorado College was the final team from the west region. Rhodes would have been lucky to be top 5 or 6 in the west with how results looked, and the west was a weaker region. The south is lucky that they take 2 auto bids, because honestly, they didn't deserve a single one.
They don't deserve any? You didn't happen to invent the BCS did you?

That\'s a little strong, don\'t you think? You\'re basically saying that at nationals, Rhodes and Emory will come in second-to-last and last. Not going to happen. Both teams deserve to be there. So does UT Tyler.
