No, he just wants to get on the Olympic team for Beijing - according to a post on RW UK forums if he doesn't run 2:30 in Paris he's going to quit, and not do the documentary at all.
So no, he's not trying to prove how tough marathoning is, he just wants his 15mins of fame. If he wanted to show how tough if it he'd do the documentary regardless of his result in Paris.
