Justinsport clearly knows nothing about indoor rowing. The machine Froning rows on, and all Crossfit gyms use, is a Concept2 machine. The same Concept2 that has been used in every competition in the history of the sport.

And to say his time isn't legit because of his technique? OMG you could not be more stupid. There is no official technique in indoor rowing. Many people's erg technique would literally sink a boat on the water, but its still 100% legal and accepted on an erg. And using bad technique makes you slower, not faster. you cannot cheat on an erg by using bad technique. An indoor rowing machine is not meant to measure grace and aesthetics on the water. It is an ergometer. It measures watts of power, nothing more, nothing less. Thats why it is so popular in Crossfit circles, because it is a way to truly measure power output of an athlete.

Please comment on something you have even a sliver of knowledge about.

fine, i admit i was no good at running. that's why i needed to join a combination sport. it gave me a reason to be mediocre, and people like me for it.

Ashton Eaton is not the average decathlete. He is the world record holder. It's dumb to compare him to Froning who is not head and shoulders above every other cross fitter. And I disagree that decathletes are decent in all of their events. Running a 5:00 mile is not decent.

You keep missing the point of cross fit. It's not to be stellar in an individual event. It's about the combination of performances so stop isolating events and concluding that he is not good. The high school girls that are better than him in running will NEVER be able to do the other things that he can do.

Froning is like a Swiss army knife. He is good at a bunch of tasks but not great at any. I am far more impressed by an athlete with a singular focus on a sport or event. Think about running as an example; there can be such a huge difference between being great at say the mile or just being good. When someone gets to those elite levels even a fraction of a second may mean taking one's training to a whole new level. That's why I'm not impressed with Froming just being good at many things. He doesn't necessarily have to push any of the boundaries to the limit.

Apparently, you're too stupid to read, so I'll spell it out for you.

Weightlifting is a great sport, but those lifts are highly technical. It would be like judging somebody's sprinting and jumping ability based on the pole vault. Justin and other idiots rattle off Froning's clean and snatch and disregard his deadlift/squat/bench because his other lifts are quite average. He spends lots of time working on clean/snatch technique in the full lift variations, which nobody does in sports, because it is useful for crossfit. Ergo, using those lifts and comparing them to people that don't do them is retarded. Compare squat/bench/dl, more basic lifts that test strength and he becomes quite average again (5'9", 200lbs, barely benching over 300lbs is pathetic).

High school girls cannot demolish decas in running, what on earth are you talking about. There isn't a decent decathlete out there that isn't running at least an 11.0 100m, 50.0 400m, and topping it off with a 1500m under 5 (after 9 other events). Sure, the 1500m isn't amazing, but it is a far cry from an >20min 5k and >60sec 400m. Completely different. And that is just decent decathletes that might make the trials B-standard if they are lucky, not the ones claiming to be the best in the world.

Every cross fitter isn't a >20min 5k or >60sec 400m runner. Froning may be one of those, but there are plenty of other top Cross fitters running faster than that. And yes there are high school girls that can demolish decent decathletes in running. A 5:00 1500m is slow for a high school girl. And a 5:00 1500m is in no way a "far cry" from a 20min 5k. Those performances are about the same.

They aren't even close to the same--are you high? Plus, I was being generous. Nobody in the top 10 in the US for deca ran >4:50 at trials, and that is obviously at the end of competition. With the competition and places already decided, hardly anybody other than Eaton and a couple others were pushing it (Hardee and Clay had no benefit for example).

A 20min 5k is way, way off that performance. Plus, even worse, the 60sec 400m is not in the same universe. Dude can't break 60 and these guys are running well under 50.

I guarantee you Froning made up those numbers or has never actually really laced them up for an all out effort.

I do no think Rich Froning is the worlds best athlete or the worlds most athletic person. However I do think it is fair to that he is the worlds fittest person.

Read the CrossFit journal where they explain "what is fitness?". It will be tough to argue against.

A 5min 1500m is closer to 20:00 for 5k. Look it up. Froning isn't crossfit's only top guy. There are guys much better at the running portions than he is. A 4:30 decathlete still sucks at the 1500m.

And why are you comparing them to high school girls? Can those fast high school runner do any of the other stuff that Froning can do? No.

Froning has a pretty solid grip on CrossFit. What is it, 2 titles and a 2nd place?

They run way faster than 5min for 1500m, just like Froning's 5k pr is actually 21:xx and I'm rounding down to be generous. A 4:30 1500m is on another planet compared to a 20-21min 5k. Not to mention the 400m. That's the one that is truly mind boggling. If you run a 400m in 60seconds, you are both slow and unfit. i doubt there are many people under a 6 minute mile that can't run well under 60sec 400m.

I'm making a point that the worst event on a relative basis for most decathletes (1500m) is way better than Froning's worst event (anything involving running). I'm highlighting Froning's inability to run any distance. For practical matters, the man is immobile.
