He doesn't train daily and is 10 years removed from being elite. Not to mention, he is 6'5". Notice how there are almost no elite crossfitters that are even 6'. That's because everything they do is weighted towards qualities that don't help in other sports. Being short with short limbs helps get you better numbers in lifts and numbers on bodyweight exercises, but hurts your ability to run, throw, and jump. All of which crossfitters have shown they are completely noncompetitive in even with high school girls.

Whatever, he's got a point. I know many runners and have known them from their early beginnings of running throughout their running career. Hardly anyone ever looks "fitter" as they get better. Typically they:
1. look the same despite their increased mileage
2. still have a bit of a belly
3. neglect their upper body
You won't see a miraculous transformation through running.
It's 95% diet, 5% weightlifting. 0% running.

Yeah, there are guys that go to the gym for decades that barely look like they lift, too. And I see obese swimmers at the pool all the time when I crosstrain. That has nothing to do with the veracity of running. Shugart is an unathletic hack--he could use all the running he could get.

Point taken. But those are the folks that use pink dumbbells for 50 reps or guys who don't have their diets under control.
Anyone with a balanced lifting approach will look a lot "fitter" if he spends the same time on the right exercises as the runner does on running. Think: bench, press, flyes, deadlift, squat, pullups/pulldowns, rows.
I posted it because I know a few guys that fit the description he gave. They're pretty good runners too, but man do they look bad at the pool. Also I was looking over some pictures of a meeting at the our local running club and no way would I pick the group out to be a bunch of runners if I didnt know any better.
Again, that article is geared towards people doing a lot of running simply to get fit and look better. Just running really isnt the best way to do that.

I think combat athletes are probably the ones who deserve the title "fittest on earth". And I'd bet that he is a better all-around athlete than Froning. But he clearly does not have as muscular of a build as Froning. I think he'd have to put on those 30 pounds of muscle to catch up.

Well, there are two sides to that coin. If you are going to make excuses for a guy with long limbs in Crossfit's lifting events, then you can't expect someone with short limbs to do well in running, jumping, or throwing events.
Besides, short limbs are useful for a lot more than just lifting. Quick first step, strength in a wrestling clinch, stopping and starting and making cuts, etc... A lot of sprinters have done poorly in NFL not just because of wooden hands, but because they don't have "football speed". So I would not consider short limbs an athletic defect by any stretch. It's just a body type issue that determines which sports you're suited in.
Regarding Pappas... He was the best decathlete in the world 10 years ago. Even if it was 10 years ago, he's got legit credentials.
Who is to say he isn't in the gym training for crossfit? His numbers would indicate he trains at least 5-6 days a week.
Finishing as high as he did in his region is very good, but he is not even in the same discussion as the lowest level Games athlete.

This has already been brought up a million times. In fact, I think I was the first person on letsrun to start linking to 5k times. I don't think Froning is the world's fittest man because he is not a good enough runner, and it is certainly true that Crossfit training will not make you fast.
But having said that, I believe in giving credit where it is due. Froning can row a 2k on an erg in 6:25 which is a phenomenal, though sub-elite time. So I do think it is fair to say that he has a great blend of strength and endurance.

Also, those 2010 numbers are out of date. He can snatch 300lbs now...and I believe he can run closer to 20mins flat for 5K. Obviously, not a good runner...by top runners' standards...but not exactly a hack for someone who can do all that other stuff. And we happen to be focusing on Rich Froning. We could have focused on the 2009 champ...Mikko Salo...who can run in the 17's for 5K, row similarly, and can do most of the same stuff...but isn't quite as strong.
I'm pretty sure we wouldn't even be having this discussion if it wasn't for Crossfit's "World's Fittest Man" talk. People can't help but attack. Much the same as when people claim their religion is #1.

His erg time is irrelevant because it is not on a competition-approved ERG and with correct technique. Comparing the times are meaningless. Worse than comparing an altitude and wind assisted handtimed 100m with somebody that competed at a real meet.
CrossFitters only talk about his clean/snatch because nobody gives a fck about them. Even weightlifting coaches say it is retarded for athletes to waste their time doing those variations. That's why no powerlifter ever does a clean or a snatch, let alone any athlete that also spends time doing stuff outside of the weightroom. Froning's squat/dl/bench are nothing special whatsoever, lower than a lot of sprinters and football players for that matter. Those lifts require somebody to spend hours practicing technique, which he has said he does.
He can't post legitimate numbers in any commonly participated in athletic activity. The fact he can't even post an elite squat/dl on top of the piss poor running (below a decent high school girl) shows there is no 'all-around' athleticism in this cat.

He has a full-time job working >50hrs a week and a family. Froning has neither, considering his job is CrossFit. Pappas certainly isn't training as much as he did when he was a sponsored, full-time healthy athlete. Pappas barely trains.[/quote]

Nobody cares about the clean or snatch? You know they're Olympic sports, right? If you're going to dismiss his clean and snatch, then you should also dismiss his running. Fronting is a combination athlete. He is not supposed to be stellar in any one event. Just like how top decathletes usually aren't stellar in any on event. Highschool girls could demolish decathletes in running also.
