Not to take anything away from O'brien's great run, but wasn't he in the fast heat ? The slower heat was won in 1:53.

He was in the fast heat, but that was divided into two sections. He won the slower section of the fast heat with his 1:48 but the guys who ran in the 1:46s were in a "different" race than him.

How about Kosgei dropping a 14:30 completely solo at Roberts this past weekend? Why go all the way to Oregon to run fast?

14:30 really isn't that fast for Kosgei. The hating on O'Brien for going to Oregon to run his 1:48 is absurd and should stop. Fast runners will do whatever it takes to get in the right race and run fast times. Kosgei would benefit from hopping in a few more competitive races himself. We'd probably see more performances like 8:43 steeple and Penn.

Everybody hates on Jimmy for going to Oregon. Why don't we hear the same criticism of Villanova or Georgetown or Wisconsin or anybody else for sending all their guys all the way to Palo Alto to run fast?

If your school is willing to foot the bill for you to go to Hayward field and brush elbows with some big time athletes in the track mecca of the country, why the hell wouldn't you go?

Plus, with former DIII studs Symmonds and Leer getting post-collegiate opportunities out there, maybe Jimmy O was doing a little networking for his future.

I'd rather see him go to Oregon and drop a sub 14, that's just me though.

The next person that hates on O'Brien for going out to Oregon should realize that...

He may not be as naturally talented as Kosgei, but he rises to the level of competition. I am not saying he would have won in the fast heat, but he would have run even faster.

people should stop hating on O'Brien for going to Oregon to run fast and just realize how great Brian Butzler's leg speed is...if I'm not mistaken Butzler was in that 800 but his time couldn't count because he was missing during parts of the race because of his ability to move faster than the speed of light...god I want leg speed like that

Lame....... the joke is dead.... it's even more dead than teg running a 10k...

Butzler's a stand up guy and i'm hoping he ends up running really well.

Wow I didn't mean for it to seem like I was dogging O'Brien for going to Oregon. O'Brien is a great runner. I'd love to see him and Peter race a quick 800 or 1500; hopefully they'll both end up in the same race at nationals and help each other push the pace. And I'm sure 95% of athletes, given the same chance, would run at Oregon. And the other 5% are lying.

But if you don't think running a 14:30 (sixth time in the country, two seconds off of auto) by yourself, lapping the field, at a pathetically small meet isn't impressive, then I don't know what to tell you.

I'm happy for Butzler that he seems to be doing better now, and I wish him well getting into nats and racing well there, but there's one thing I wonder--I gotta wonder, if he has that much leg speed in races, being at the back till the last 300 or so, how would he have done as a sprinter? I know he's kinda thin right now, but if he built up his muscle mass and trained for, say 400, I think he'd kill.

Anybody know what butzler's best 800 is?

I just find it strange how suddenly if one person has a good performance, we all have to suddenly discredit it by saying someone else ran better based on a completely different race and situation. O'Brien had a great race at a great meet. Kosgei had a great race in a time trial situation and goes to show that he can run fast in any situation. I would say both performances were great for both athletes.

That being said, we won't know who is faster at a particular event until they race straight up. Kosgei has one up on O'Brien from indoor nationals, but I'd like to think O'Brien would like to have a slightly different outcome outdoor. With Kosgei qualified in so many events, one must wonder if he will race O'Brien in the 800 or the 1500, if he and O'Brien happen to chose the same event, since those are the only two they both could run. Kosgei has an impressive steeplechase and now a 5k time as well, and I would be the first to say he probably would take the cake at anything longer than 800 versus O'Brien. We have a little more than a week to find out who's the faster man, why don't we stop the deliberation and just wait and see, its going to be a great race if it happens.

you also have to figure that kosgei ran his 1:48.7 completely solo.

even though o'brien has better 800 and 1500 times this season thus far, i would still put my money on kosgei in a head to head match up.
