I wonder why that is? One party is trying to deal in abstract issues, while the other party is running on tangible issues that affect people's everyday lives. Do you think people are wrong to be more worried about inflation, the economy, and healthcare than they are political polarization? In addition, less than 1% stated that domestic terrorism is an important issue. That tells me that people aren't buying into the January 6th narrative.

It's almost like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs except for politics. People can't worry about the abstract if their everyday needs aren't guaranteed.

it's not the economy. It's culture wars. the Rs are really good at making trans people the issue and not things that help people. Rs literally spent 10 years trying to take health insurance away from Americans. Literally. No joke. That was a major goal.

Rs know their policies are deeply unpopular so they divert to trans kids and 'what is a woman' questions. And they will keep doing that because it works for them.

The circumstances surrounding the death of Ivana Trump are suspicious. This deserves investigation.

If you really believe that democrats are going to lose in November because of trans issues, you are extremely naive. Biden's approval rating isn't below 40% because of trans rights or LGBTQ or healthcare. It's because people are deeply unhappy with the economy and inflation. 35% of poll respondents cited those issues as the top issues.

It also has to do with the fact that he is seemingly becoming more and more incompetent. I need to go back and find it, but a poll showed that Biden's approval started dropping sharply after his handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal.

Like it or not, in the midterms the party of the current president usually faces losses. It just looks like this year is going to be much worse than usual.

Do you not listen to the right wing? Do you not check in on foxnews.com? The stories are rarely about actual issues, because they don't get clicks. it's usually gender issues, racial crime, immigration and 'crazy libs' stories. The wedge issues.

This country is neither racist or biased against alternative lifestyles. On the other hand, libs have gone overboard promoting an agenda that checks a woke box rather than on need or merit. One reason this Administration has failed so miserably.

I might could see your point if this wasn't a NYT poll that skews towards liberal voters. I don't think they're lying about their main concerns being the economy and inflation. It also doesn't explain why Biden's approval rating is so low among independent voters as well. Dems and independents should be sympathetic towards the cultural issues of the times.

a major story of the last few cycles - 2016 to now - is that people lie to pollsters. I don't have time to go into it, but polls have become less accurate because of polarization.

But always....very few people being polled will reveal to a stranger potentially offensive things like 'trans issues.' and 'trans issues' might not even be on the list of issues offered to those being polled.

look at it this way.... no one is going to ask 'are you voting R to keep black people in their place' but all of us know that is a major factor in elections in the confederacy. And if asked that kind of question few would admit it.

People don't have the luxury of being worried about the extras when they can't even afford the basics. "It's the economy, stupid".

Surely, you would think abortion would be a hot topic that people wouldn't be ashamed to tell pollsters is an issue for them. Only 5% of those polled cited abortion. That's right in line with where abortion usually polls historically.

My "roughly half" was based on the ~47% of Americans who wanted to sign up for 4 more years of Trump. If the election were held today, I'm guessing that it would be in roughly the same ballpark. That obviously doesn't tell you why roughly half voted against him, but it does at least tell you that roughly half don't see/admit the threat.

I know that silly people will call this naive, but in an allegedly sophisticated, modern country, someone like Trump should have had an approval rating in the single digits. NO ONE should have thought that it was OK for a President to act as he did. And I'm pretty damn confident that the founding fathers would fully agree. They simply must be rolling over in their graves.
