Probably he timed the race on his watch at just under 4 hours into the 3 hours (they didn't have chip timing then did they? So he may have legitly went from the starting line to finished line in under 4). And the 3 hours is all that stuck with him. And he knows he just broke an hour marker, so assumed it was 3. Heck, I'm a faster runner than him, and I ran the marathon a couple years ago just for fun and have a hard time remembering what I ran for it (it's obviously my PR too). I can remember for 5k, 10k, 10 mile and other distances I care about and train seriously for, but since that was more just to do it, I don't really bother to try and remember it. I kind of had that casual runner approach to the marathon that I'm sure Ryan had. It's the distance that most people care about (especially someone running it around 4 hours), not that time

We've already caught him on one big lie with this story already--his political lies area another story altogether--so why would you be so quick to give him the benefit of the doubt for the rest his his wild story?
Everything about his personality suggests that he's quite capable of being the sort of 4:00 douche who would line up on the front row regardless of where he's supposed to be at the start. We have no idea how well-policed the corrals would have been at Grandma's back in 1990, or if they even had corrals back then in the first place. I'm not accusing him of doing this, I'm just saying it's assuming way too much to give him another minute or two based on what we know up to this point.

Wow,2:50. A strong time for a non-runner. This demonstrates the focus and attention to detail that we need from our leaders. No shortcuts for this guy. Just hard work, focus, attention to detail and honesty. This guy is the complete package - a straight shooter who knows his numbers and is truly committed to to the Randian philosophy of only taking credit for his achievements. Keep giving it to us straight Paul. Lead us like you led so many runners on Marathon day.

Seems Ryan hasn't learned his lesson from the marathon snafu. This a.m. he was boasting about actually having emerged from the lunar module just ahead of Neil Armstrong and thus taken the first steps on the moon. Despite the fact that Ryan wasn't even born in 1969, he must figure that Armstrong's recent death protects him from being called out on this lie. What's next??!?
Do you think Lyin Ryan actually was ribbed about this lie by his brother over dinner or is this another fib?

I usually agree with you, but I think you're right, your party affiliation does affect how you look at this controversy, and apparently you guys are the only ones saying "he probably broke four with the chip time". I doubt they had chips back in 1990. With 2000 people in a race, how long is it going to take you to cross the starting line?

An honest person would say they don't know their time. They wouldn't get strangely specific, saying a good time--believable for an average fit guy but very good.

I'd also add that LRC's being awfully generous to Ryan in their QOTD. In the local marathon of a few 1000 people, most 4 hour finishers have about 3 minutes chip - gun difference. But I guess suggesting 3:50 makes it sound plausible he was "just an hour off".

I won't argue with this in theory; however, some are much bigger liars than others. Some NEED to lie more than others, and it's important to distinguish the small ones from the big ones. If I see two guys standing on a street corner--one has a pocket knife and the other a machete--it would be idiotic to say, "They're both carrying knives, so they're both the same to me!"
