Russia has been trying to take Avdiivka since October of 2023. It has lost more soldiers and equipment than it did in both the first and second Chechen wars trying to take a small city of about 30,000 people. The only reason Russia is able to make advances now is that Ukraine forces are on a harsh artillery diet due to Republican's blocking US military funding and Orban delaying EU support. Thus, it is abundantly clear that RU's armed forces are extremely incompetent and the only way RU can have any success militarily is through political interference in donor nations. Republican opposition to the funding is now nothing more than an effort to shift the advantage on the battlefield to Putin in order to support an authoritarian government over a democratic nation that dared to oppose Putin.

The only supply line left for Ukraine is a dirt (mud) road. It will be savaged by Russia. Without supplies, there will be mass death or mass surrender for Ukraine.
