The biggest development of 2023 is the massive reduction of financial support for Ukraine from the EU. EU aid has gone down from the originally desired amount 50 billion to 20 billion after Hungary's successful veto. Now, instead of individual bi-lateral agreements totaling the original desired amount of 50 billion, the EU is now accepting lowered collective expectations. Much lower. Hungary has just saved countless lives by helping to shorten this war. Hungary's Orban deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his courage against NATO's blood lust for-profit.

Their premise of merely being aligned with the West is not a victory for Ukraine. Russia let Ukraine align with the west since 2014 without war. It was continued ethnic cleansing that pushed Russia over the top and which crated their SMO purpose. If it was about about aligning with the west, the SMO would have started in 2014 with a stated purpose of only "no NATO alignment." NATO has been expanding East for years, crossing red lines and breaking acknowledged agreements, with no response from Russia.

Confirmed. I would have to agree on the importance of this funding. This is the end of Ukraine. To miss out on 30 billion and at this time, it’s the death blow. It won’t play out immediately but it will. America will not pick up that missing 30 billion. America probably won’t even get Biden’s 60 billion request. As the war goes on and it’s clear Ukraine can’t win back the territory it wants, the funding situation will get more and more grim and then the collapse along the front and everyone runs to try to save their lives.

At this point, Ukrainian don't even have a negotiating position. Never occurred to the west that the Russians might launch a winter offensive and roll over the spent Ukrainians. They seriously thought they would just sit around waiting for Kiev to recover.
Pro-Kiev posters here have no skin in the game, and are too mentally ill to think straight. But the Ukrainians would be well advised to settle for losing the 4 oblasts if that's what's offered. Otherwise, the Russians will take Kharkov and Odessa too. Both of which are Russian cities, and will return to the federation by hook or by crook.147 -

Odessa has successfully defended against multiple d-day style amphibious assaults since the beginning of the war, and Odessa was where they launched the missiles from that sank the Russian/BRICS flagship the Moskova :)))

Just watched on-the-ground videos by Atlas New’s correspondent and Northern Provision’s correspondent in Dnipro and Lyiv. Multiple shopping malls, hospitals, and apartment buildings far from the front lines hit by Russian cruise missiles, including a maternity hospital. Only 10 dead due to air defenses and air raid sirens. Meanwhile the airbases nearby were untargeted.
Russia is a terrorist state, nothing more.

Russia's missile barrage is Putin's retribution for the loss of the Novocherkassk and in no way an indication that Russia is on the verge of some great victory against Ukraine. Russia has made nominal gains as Ukraine has been forced to go into a defensive posture due to the uncertainty over western aid. But Russia is still Russia and has no clue how to effectively launch an offensive and is still relying on scorched Earth tactics where Russia absorbs massive losses for nominal gains. In Avdiivka, Russia lost 21 tanks against two Ukrainian tanks and still has not been able to take the small city of about 30,000 people. Russia is still relying on meat waves and cannot mount a significant combined arms assault on thinly stretched UA forces. That is pathetic for what should be the second most powerful armed forces in the world. Ukraine also was able to take out five advanced RU bombers this week. Russia took Marinka, a small suburb outside of Donetsk after a very long and costly battle. This would be a half decent victory but for the fact that Marinka has been completely destroyed by Russian artillery barrages. Russia has even started using chemical weapons against Ukraine, dropping grenades from drones that disperse tear gas on Ukrainian positions. So, Russia is simply fighting a war to try and exhaust Ukraine and not to actually take towns and cities that are in tact and can serve as logistical hubs for assaults deeper into UA territory. These Russian assaults are extremely costly for RU forces. If UA has sufficient funding to sustain its defenses (between the EU's $20 bil loan and a US aid package in January, UA will have sufficient support to at least maintain a strong defensive posture), it could very well grind Russia to a point where it cannot keep up in terms of personnel and arms. Russia has been able to sustain artillery production, but cannot build new armored vehicles, planes and ships in short order. Those can take years to replace. Unless Russia figures out how to actually fight effectively, it will spend the next year pushing its resources up to the brink.
