Ukraine has not held the line on most fronts. Only Krynky but with no forward progress there. Ukraine finally figured out it was a meat grinder trap after months being stuck on the river's edge getting blasted, unable to expand. Everything they need must be brought over on small boats. They get over to the Russian side with very little. Food, aid, and small arms ammo. It's a suicide mission.

There was never violence leading to war until November 2013. America had nothing to do with the initial fighting on the ground. Zero. They were watching events like everyone else. America is not responsible at all for the start. Your point applies to prolonging the war after it started but not the start.
