its too early in the season, he should be back in his usual ass kicking shape later in the season when it really matters
An early season loss to the guy who was the #4 American last year means very little. Wariner, no longer competing on a collegian, is on a different schedule to peak and has made that pretty clear. The guy didn't just win the Olympic gold....he was the top guy in the world for about two months of the spring/summer last year, so he's no fluke.
But it is a much improved 400 picture in the U.S. The bigger question will be if Wariner can beat Kerron Clement for the USA title... if Clement isn't exhausted by all the college races he has to do.
apparantly the loss was upsetting for wariner last week in Waco...he threw his trademark glasses on the ground as he crossed the line in 2nd place..
yes..he has major comp from LaSM and KC...their indoor PR's are much faster...
I doubt KC will be "exhausted" by all his college races ....seeing as he has yet to run an open outdoor race. everything I have seen so far this year has been relay legs.

Clement is a US citizen. He has also stated several times that he will be concentrating on the 400IH during this outdoor season, so unless his hurdling goes poorly, I wouldn't expect to see him in the 400m at USATF.
Give the guy a break. he didn't run indoor this is his second race of the year, and he's peaking for a european season in July, not the NCAA's like Williamson presumably is.

Perhaps Clyde Hart has adjusted his training somewhat over the last decade to peak his athletes even more precisely. Perhaps he's doing very different things than Michael Johnson did back then. Perhaps they're busting ass to improve over the long run, just as distance runners do, instead of trying to win every meet. Would you rather him do these time trials/evaluations at the track at Baylor? No, you want to see the guy run.

I ran at the Drake Relays last weekend and I got a chance to watch Wariner. He still looked pretty strong and I believehe said it was only his second race of the year. Williamson has had many races over the season and just had a little better kick at the end then Wariner. I can still see him running as fast as ever in a short time.

1) Wariner is not as good now when Johnson was in his prime. Johnson would usually open in April with a time between 44.5 and 45.0.
2) Wariner proved last summer that he is the best in the world now. Losing two races by a few tenths of a second in April doesn't change that. If Williamson beats him at the World Champs, then you can say that Wariner is not the best.
3) Wariner stated that he wants to break MJ's record in the 400. That doesn't mean he thinks he can break it this year. He is only 21. He arguably has a few more years until he hits his prime.
4) It is foolish to make judgements on someone based on two early season races.
I don't think Wariner, has ever been cocky. He is not nearly as boastful as our 100 meter bronze medalist and he is not outspoken at all. He just states his goals, that is all. And you act like him losing to Darold Williamson, another low 44 guy who won a gold medal and anchored last years 4x4 with a sick split is someone awful to lose to? Williamson had an entire indoor season to prepare, even the World Record Holder indoors Kerron Clement didn't run real well this weekend, he "only" split 45.2 at penn. Good god, its just now May, give these guys a break...World championships are so long away.
Wariner and Clyde Hart might not respect (much) anyone else out there. As the defending national and olympic champion, I believe he has a pass through USATFs this year, and even if he doesn't, they might not respect anyone enough to do anything but train through the meet, figuring that he doesn't have to do much more than show up to be among the top 3, so going fast early is not necessarily something that's helpful.
Wariner is running a little slower than he ran at the same time/meet last year, but if the objective is really to run a 400 WR in Europe (say Zurich), this might be exactly according to plan.

Jeremy Wariner ran 45 seconds and lost to Darold Williamson who is in the top 5 in the world in 400m! Why do you guys care so much? Jeremy Wariner is fast but what counts is later in the season and you guys are underestimating Darold Williamson, he's world class. Would you guys be this upset if Bernard Lagat lost to Isaac Songok in April? Some guys are not sharp early in the season but then become super sharp in late August, where it truly counts. Other guys are pretty good early in the season and improve as the season progresses but not as much as some other guys. Bottom line...
1. Wariner ran 45 seconds
2. Wariner lost to Williamson who is top 5 in the world
3. It's April not August!

all of these are the usual good points from californian. i think it's also important to keep in mind that, unlike all of the distance runners posting on this thread, 400 guys like the weather warm and run better times when it's warm. it wasn't exactly ideal conditions for 400 work this weekend. both of those guys are capable of running a bit faster.
