He was there the whole way then just stepped off the track.

Why would anyone react with glee because a runner DNF'd?
Are you that desperate for attention?
Where did you notice my "glee"? I thought Gabe would run well, and tried NOT to listen to people who doubted him. The exclamation marks I typed was like me saying "I guess you guys were right!!"
Good job Carlson, 29:29, and I think this track season was the first time he broke 15 min. for the 5k, he's improving rapidly. The dude with the outrageous facial hair will continue to roll this spring.
yes, Ahlers is the one from Oregon, via South Dakota (Sturgis)
He was one of 2 rabbits in the race. The first heat had 2 rabbits as well.
Don't think that Gabe was a rabbit, believe that he just dropped out after or around lap 17 or 18. Came through with Dobson right at 4:40 pace through 4 miles. Didn't think that he looked that comfortable, although Dobson did, especially after rabbiting an earlier race.
It was announced before the race that Gabe Jennings would be dropping out at 20 laps. I'm not sure if he made it 20, but that is what they said before the race.
I thought Gabe looked pretty good, and they did seem say/make it seem like Gabe was there to help out with the pacing.
it's really not that weird for someone to enter a race and do a little pacing or just get a workout, especially at their alma mater. they don't really hold five milers anymore and that sounds like about what gabe wanted. i know that when i saw the results i was pretty sure that what you described was the case; it would be kind of strange for a miler to do a 10K at Stanford. what wasn't strange or unexpected, of course, was the glee which people on this board reacted with when they saw what they thought was a "failure" by another runner.
one thing that is weird about it is that he was listed in the results. why wasn't dobson listed in the results? if gabe wasn't planning on finishing all along, i don't see a reason to have him in there.
I can't see why people think Gabe is going to doing anything. The guy hasn't run anything good in almost 5 years. He is a strange and that is the only reason people talk about the guy.
I don't think that people really do. This guy was an Olympian and can't find a sponsor. That is almost impossible for a guy his age.
Interesting, but if the guy was doing part of the race as a workout, why did he sit down on the infield? Naturally, I think he would jog (or walk) around for his cool down.
Gabe was planning to run the entire distance. It is funny what you said about not jogging around. His father screamed at him about 5 times "get some clothes on...do a little running around". Gabe thought that it would feel easier than it did, that was why he was in the slow heat.

you, I and most "normal" runners would; with gabe, sitting down in the infield sounds pretty normal for him. i'm suprised he didn't pull out the drums.

way to be university of portland freshmen (or redshirt freshmen). john moore at 29:17, david kinsella (who is a true freshman but is redshirting this year) at 29:20, and michael kilburg at 29:36. not spectacular, but very solid for such young runners in their first ever track 10k (moore and kinsella... i think that kilburg might have run at U of O last year).
That is a great time for John Moore. Too bad this year is so fast...he might have got into nationals any other year...it'll probably take 29:03 this year.
i suspect auto will be required to qualify for ncaas...ie 29;00
