I have an idea, let's wait to see what he runs outdoor. I mean, :44-mid is impressive anytime of the year. He may not run much faster, or he may break another friggin' WR...which would legitimize his indoor WR for all of you, even though I don't think he needs it legitimized. It's not like we're talking about steroids, Bonds, and the homerun record...we are talking about a man beating the clock, fairly.
how do you know he beat the clock fairly?
There needs to be a net downhill asterick on the world record.

There are some athletes though who run better indoors and do not make the same transition outdoors.

On that track, unless you draw lane one, there is a net elevation drop. The farther out a runner starts the greater the elevation drop. It is in effect a downhill record.

The net drop in elevation is overrated because of two factors.
#1. The longer the drop the higher the climb at 100M, so even if you get another drop you were either thrown off rhythm or had to bump up your energy expenditure to maintain pace.
#2. The higher you are = the further out you were. When it comes time to make the break you have a little further to go to get to the inside lane by the next corner. And since this track has wide corners the straight is slightly shorter meaning you have to break sharper. I know it is only a little further but it is still further.
Its not like he's the only guy to ever start outside. Give him his credit.
#1 Yes there is a drop followed by an equal rise at 100m. However, the inital drop allows you to accelerate to top speed faster, making the rise at 100m an unequal elevation change (i.e. easier to overcome).
#2 It is not further. The start is staggered. Everyone runs 400m. Same for the 800m on an outdoor track, or any other staggered start race. At the break, as long as the runner makes a straight line for the tangent of the curve and doesn't try to cut right over to lane one, he/she will run exactly the allotted race distance.

No it is not. The stagger is to the break line - not carried through the path that the runner in lane 6 has to take to get to lane 1.
If it is a two corner stagger - it is not a two corner plus.
So compare lane 1 who has to run 50 meters to cover 50 meters. The runner in lane 6 is at least 5 meters out from that runner. If he takes the longest possible time to merge he will spread the 5 meters out over the entire 50 meters.
The distance he has to cover is 50.249 meters to go 50 meters down the track. That is just less than ten inches. Doesn't seem like much - but try sending someone after a world record and then add 10 inches onto the distance.
And I still contend that the altering in pace by changing levels is a handicap compared to someone who runs on the level.
But I do agree that running the wider turn is an advantage from a mechanics standpoint.
Bottom line - I haven't seen anyone else run the time he did under any indoor circumstances and they're welcome to try.
The world record and American records don\'t seem creepy to me at all. Especially the 200m, this dude has run in the 20.30s so many times this season alone, it was simply a matter of time before he dropped his time. So don\'t hate a player y\'all. As for the 400m, Clement is incredibly talented, indoor sprints is a lot more technical than outdoors. A well trained athlete will performed better indoors if he/she is discpline in pays attntion to detail than a talented one. Put it in perspective guys, Michael Johnson 44.63 isn\'t such a strong world record. The guy only ran the indoor 400m a few time in his brilliant career. I beleive he could have run in the very low 44s or high 43s if he particularly trained for it. There\'s nothing wrong with the track. If you think there is, go try setting a PR on it and let us all know how it went. peace
i'm sure i would pr in the 200 or 400 if i had the chance to run there. i've only run on 2 banked tracks in my life, and neither were banked at a very steep angle....and that does make a difference (that's why they bank them, and that's why they make conversions for them).
