I do agree that "LoLo" is not the best person to bring light to the difficulty of making a bobsled Olympic/World team and still make ends meet. Welcome to the early goings of pro runners.
I assume she knew and was full aware of the stipend she would receive from the bobsled federation during her 7 months of participation.
I think she’s the one who needs to decide if she can make a living from athletics doing track or make a living on a bobsled team. She knows the level of living standard she desires and making a little over a $100 a month doesn't satisfy the standard. However, if bobsledding is a hobby then "making" a $100 a month profit is pretty good. I have a hobby, and it costs me a little over $100 a month.
If I could have my hobby pay for itself...voila
My other "hobby" is running, and I spend about $59 or less(on sale final discount at Kohl's) on running shoes...and nooooo, I can not make ends meet from running...and not even close to getting a stipend. But I do enjoy my life and am quite happy.
I have had to make life style choices all along the way of my life, as I'm sure many of you have too.
It sounds to me, Miss LoLo wants to "make" it as a bobsledder and the lack of bobsled federation funds is hindering her "dream" of becoming a top contender for the next Olympics.
Well, many before her have made their country's team with little or no help from a government or federation.
My guess is that she needs to decide how badly she wants to try to make the bobsled team in the next Winter Olympics. Already an Olympian it would be a feat for her to be the Winter and Summer Olympics in the same Olympic year.
In the meantime, Home Depot hires future Olympians.
Or she may want to have a chat with Adam Nelson.
I know she wanted to bring the low stipend to the attention of the public...she succeeded. I did not know the sled cost so much and the work is so great. Also, that it's not really supported. For some reason I thought it was one big happy family...boy was I wrong. However, I do not think she thought it would turn out like it has for her.
And I do think bobsledders deserve way more than they are getting...I for one...LOVE watching the sport every four years...crazy...I would not in my wildest dreams ever want to do it.
