i thought the metaphor was just beating you over the head and thus didn't find it funny, but the intent was there.

in the end, she got one more view/read and i even am giving feedback. that's success in this world.

she won USA's in 2010 and ran 15:00 to win a diamond league race and got 7th in the worlds final in 2011 had one rough year and then took time off for pregnancy so she's pretty relevant in the sport. she annoys me but you can't say she isn't relevant in the sport on a national level at least, but also kind of internationally depending on your standards

I find the "self-promoting" criticism to be a pretty weird one. Do you forget how awful USATF, the broadcasters of track meets, and the major shoe companies are at promoting the sport, especially the distance-running part of it? There's a vacuum to fill. Lauren, for one, is trying to do that.

The posters on this website have the worst case of tall poppy syndrome I have ever seen. And the same people then whine about why track isn't more popular.

If you know the term from the prevalent use in OZ, the derision is reserved not for those who are successful alone, but those who are successful and put on superior airs.

I agree with one thing...referring to your day old son (as a mother) becoming a "bad asz mofo," is a poor choice of trying to be cool. "Bad asz" would have been amusing and well enough. The inclusion of the term "mofo" is a stretch too far in the attempt to be hip, clever or funny.

To paraphrase the movie Jerry Maguire, she ought to be hoping he becomes one of the few men who never uses that term.

Its a double edged sword. The only athletes that bring in non-hardcore track fans due to their focus on media promotion always irritate other top runners who avoid that stuff and just focus on their running.

There are a ton of recreational runners in this country. And fitness trainers. They don't pay attention to elite racing and follow the major meets. But they do read Runners World and Fitness Magazines and they do know of Kara Goucher and Lola Jones. Or Suzy Favor Hamilton when she focused on media overexposure to benefit her career.

None of those people probably were inspired to become hard core track fans. And Lauren Fleshman usn't going to change that but she has the right to try to make a buck off the sport any way she can. Just like anyone else.

But don't confuse that with "giving back" and putting an effort to boost exposure to the sport.

However if you look at NASCAR that sport was built by encouraging all the drivers to promote the sport. But NASCAR realized they had a huge target marke of fans. Elite Track and Field and Marathoning have nothing like that.

The people who support major marathons have no interest in the top competitors. Most people that run and watch the races can't even tell you who the winner is.

So Fleshman and Famiglietti are'nt really going to help build this sport but they should not be criticized for trying to make a living at it. Which is tough to do for long if you aren't in the top 5 in the World in your event.

Agree. Her baby boy is beautiful. Seems like a lot on here are jealous. Congrats to Lauren and her husband. Good read. Enjoy these moments, they grow up too fast!
