Lomong's PB is eight seconds off of Rupp's. Lomong has never beaten Rupp in a 5000. In the last two 5000s they ran against each other (Trials and Olympics), Rupp dusted Lomong. What's the evidence that there's any issue here?

Lomong will do the 1500 and won't make the team. It'll be a complete disaster.

Derrick won't make the team in the 10k and will be then be too tired for the 5k.

Jager will be the only Schumacher guy on the World team in the steeple. Huling will bomb.

Hey, I just did some extrapolations and found that Torrence is now equal to them both at 5000m.

sorry to 'feed the troll thread' here guys, but I think lopez is the bigger talent here. I remember watching him run at the NYS outdoor meets in high school and it was unreal, it didnt look like he even trained but he'd show up and crush everyone. So did galen, obviously. I just think that talent-wise, lopez has more raw physical ability.

Could this thread be improved with a consideration of who will go to Moscow over 5000 on the men's side? Or maybe that should be it's own thread.

Lopez is and has always been an enigma.

From memory:

In H.S. Lopez ran a 49x 400m and was one nation's best xc runners, but I don't recall him running sub-9 in the 2-mile and only around 4:12 in the mile.

Lopez is a world class 800m and 5K runner, which suggest in a tactical mile or 5k, he would be unbeatable, but I have seen him out kicked easily. The list of distance runners who are capable of a 1:45x 800m is very short. On paper, in an Olympic 1500 or 5K tactical final, he should be medalist. Lopez's combination of speed/endurance suggest greatness, he ran one 3:32 and has had a few bright moments, but at a certain point in a career, you have to say he is what he is.

Perhaps he will go Moscow in whatever event he chooses, but at his talent level...a medal should be the goal.

Well, it is obvious that Lopez Lomong is going to Moscow in the 5000m. Who can defeat him? Possibly Lagat and Rupp, and nobody else. Lomong is as strong as the rest and faster at the finish. Lomong would have likely been the top American at the Prefontaine 5000m. This is the year that Lomong emerges as the top American at 5000m. It is his if he wants it. Galen is rightly targeting the 10,000m and the legend Bernard Lagat is not what he used to be. It is now or never for Lopez Lomong. He will prove to be the top American at 5000m in Moscow.
