Some of these posts are cracking me up. I have a few good answers for you. My credentials first: B.S. Psych, M.S. Counseling. Been a licensed professional counselor in TX since 2007. Years of working with very ill clients in an adult outpatient state mental health clinic and now I work in managed care.
1. Yes, CBT is fantastic. I also have practiced DBT (whoa, nelly) and Solution Focused Therapy. Each has its purposes but for me CBT is always the best.
2. The person who discounted EMDR could not be any more incorrect. EMDR is misunderstood by simpletons but is quite useful for trauma patients.
3. No, not all therapists are irrational. Some are, but many are not. I am not one of the therapists who went into it on purpose, I sorta fell into it (I only went to college so I could keep running competitively, I was an aimless, stupid child who had to pick a major). Some do go into it to sort out their own issues. Ask the therapist why they went into it.
4. Really, just find someone who you like and think is cool and seems willing to listen to you.
