People in Europe dress up all the time. In Italy for instance, young attractive men have multiple suits in their closet and it's not weird to wear one a Saturday morning for a Doppio in the mezzanine after the bistro on your Vespa.

Not quite. You build up a nice wardrobe because you want to be taken seriously by the higher-ups. Then you realize it actually counts for a lot (even though it probably shouldn't). Eventually you become comfortable wearing those clothes all the time and it feels sort of strange to "slum it" wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Old guys don't want to look like they're trying to look young.
And these are the tools that aren't saving enough $$ for things that actually matter.

You are so concerned about image that you can't even dress down on the weekends to go to the super market?

It would seem that you, and the original poster, are the ones that are (oddly) "concerned" about how other people dress.
It reminds me of people who get bent out of shape by how other people eat (e.g., vegetarian, vegan, whatever). What's it to ya?
Vegetarians cause overall food prices to go up. Vegans as well.

Are you seriously asking me why I am discussing something on a message board?
The real question is not "why do some people dress nicely" but rather "why do some people think it is OK to look like bums?"
To me, dressing nice has nothing to do with me, it has to do with showing respect for the people I'm interacting with. If I'm meeting someone and I look like I just rolled out of bed, it's like saying they weren't worth the effort of putting pants on and brushing my teeth for.
If I put on a jacket it shows that I care enough about seeing them that I took the time to make myself more presentable.

You're certainly entitled to feel this way. However, you're still wrong.
Why don't you all try not judging people by what they wear? As long as they aren't stinky or have their dick hanging out or something what could it possibly matter?

what exactly do i have to 'get by' in a coffee shop, grocery store, cafe, bookstore, etc. on a saturday afternoon? do you lead some sort of 'fashion police' squad i don't know about?

I wear a suit every day at work. I have nothing against them. I have issues with people who think that if you don't wear a suit on Saturday & Sunday you are a redneck or not cultured.
I personally find myself dressing like more of a slob as I get older because I am lazy when it comes to dressing and want to be comfortable. I make decent money and really don't care what people think. You'd be surprised how much some "slobs" make in life.
The bigger question, are these guys dressed in style? Or are they outdated?
I think it depends on where you live or what you're used to...most of the time I like to dress casual but will get dressed up for certain occasions.
