Any movie starring Christy Canyon or Amy Reid is usually explosive.

Ironman. Unless you saw the trailer you didn't expect to see the hummer get bombed.
The Shining
Wet Hot American Summmer (although most of the rest of the movie sucked)
Super Troopers ("Littering and...")
V For Vendetta ("V" speech plus 1812 overture)
The Transporter (10-minute car chase)
Kids
Cliffhanger. I couldn't believe that this hadn't been said. I don't even remember the rest of the film.
The opening of Empire Strikes Back where you find out that Luke is Darth Vader's father.
Yes! As soon as I saw the thread I immediately thought of Cliffhanger!
the opening of "shortbus" was unique.

You're right. Maybe Stallone's best film.
The opening scene of "No country for old men" is quite a shocker. Thinking about that cop struggling to break free on the jail floor is still horrifying.

That popped into my head right away. Tension and thrills and death.
Goodfellas opened up with Billy Bats who was in the trunk of the car supposed to be dead and the mob guys driving out to bury him hears some pounding noises and have to pull over and Joe Pesci stabs him about 30 times. That was a memorable opening scene.

Thank you. I've laughed several times just thinking how understated your comment is.
To Kill A Mockingbird
Opening titles and music are sublime, the small dusty town and Scout swinging into the picture from the tire swing; the opening narration is just perfect.

The Last Boy Scout

Thanks. First thing I thought of when I saw the thread title.
The other thing--and I'm not even sure it was the actual opening, now--was that animated movie about the guy whose house is lifted up by balloons (you know the one I mean?). Anyway, there was a silent sequence of a few minutes, looking at the guy's romancing and marrying a woman, and then losing her--it was just heartbreaking, and perfect.
Got it: "Up."

Haha, good answer! I also liked the reply of Kids.
