Besides casinos, where can one smoke in a bar these days?

What country are you in where people are smoking in bars?
It's called addiction.

You hit the nail on the head. Addiction is a MF. I can see no reason to frequent a bar on a 2-3 4 days a week, unless I've got a love interest working there that I want to be around, otherwise let's get out of the denial you're an alcoholic
Well you've pretty much hit the nail on the head right there.
Most of these sad middle aged men, humping around their middle age spreads, are sat there ogling and making unfulfillable fantasies with regards to some young barmaid.
They probably don't even like alcohol! The just sit there night after night lusting after some poor lass - all fuelled by both them and "her indoors" both having given up on life some time before.
An illusion, probably, but there's something sort of film noir or Tom Waitish about parking ones carcase in a corner booth in a dimly lit saloon of some vintage joint over by the Greyhound station midmorning.
Used to do that a couple time a year when I lived and worked in San Francisco. Bhagdad By The Bay. Never did run into Herb Caen or Dashiel Hammer
From my experience it’s not alcoholics at bars in the middle of the day. Most of the alcoholics I know are high functioning and don’t start drinking until after work. Most of the people I’ve encountered in bars midday work odd hours or flexible hours. Your afternoon may be their evening. Or are older people who want company and choose to drink while the alcohol is cheaper. Some older people go to a cafe every morning and drink coffee. Some go to bars when they open to drink beer. One of my favorite bars opens at 2pm and I go early quite often on days off because the happy hour crowd later in the afternoon is lame and later in the evening it’s full of DB brodudes. There’s lots of reasons to drink midday at a bar, addiction may be one of them but that’s a small percentage of people that are actually there.
Maybe they just enjoy socialising with friends?
I could never drink during the daytime these days though.
I'd be in a heap on the floor by 3pm with my trousers full of Guinness fuelled droppings.
In the UK you can't smoke in a bar or pub, so they're not "smoky" here.

Even in 2013, when the thread was started.
Smoking in bars was over by 2010 almost everywhere.
