I think the 125lb distance runner is at greater risk actually. A basketball player shouldn't be that fragile but I know must be missing something here. My hunch is that his ankle gave out and the force was tranferred up to the knee?

That was just gruesome. I knew it was bad when the trainer jumped out on the floor and immediately threw a towel over his leg.

He probably had an existing condition (likely a bone tumor) that he didn't know about.

And quite frankly the reaction has been stupid. #prayforware ???, People are acting like the guy died. It's a broken bone, happens all the time (tho not quite a public), Ware is going to get excellent care and he got immediate attention.

This was my first thought, too. A lot of knee injuries are believed to stem, at least in part, from an ankle's having been taped into rigidity, and the force moving up the leg to the knee.

That said, ordinarily an injury such as his *would* have shown up in the ankle and/or knee. He may well have already had some underlying shin injury.

Proprioception. Basketball players are notorious for having some of the worst ankle stability/ROM/strength in the sporting business. This results from years of taping them up and the fact that bball shoes are nothing but thick, cushioned casts that atrophy foot muscles.

There is NO WAY someone who was wearing even a normal shoe should have snapped their leg like that. Proprioception is about spatial awareness, and it looked like he had absolutely none. His body didn't even know it was about to land, so it never stiffened and his leg just cratered underneath his body weight.

Were he to be wearing a thinly cushioned shoe or even barefoot, he would have instantly stiffened and absorbed the shock with no stress to the joints.

If I understood the ESPN report right, the bone was sticking out six inches. That sounds like an injury that couldn't happen without some other underlying weakness in the bone.

You do not understand proprioception, or you would understand that basketball players are typically masters of it.

His coach commented in the post game interview about the 6" of bone sticking out of his leg.

I think CBS showed one, maybe two replays and when they realized how bad the break was they ALL just basically went silent...for NINE minutes.

This AND poor ankle stability seem to be some of the reasons. Basketball players and Gridiron players are extremely prone to these type of injuries as a result of taping up their ankles. I honestly do not see the need to provide more than the minimal ankle support for basketball players as they should not be doing as much lateral movement.

As a result of this oversupport, I would actually not be surprised if he was playing with bad shin splints or even a stress fracture.

I actually would not be surprised if a lot of the basketball and nfl injuries are the result of miseducating the sports medicine people - Heads up, the human body is not a robot, you cannot engineer the human body.
