The paleo diet sounds interesting but I don't think I'm gonna do it. Way too many food allergies (all nuts, all legumes, sesame). I am keeping the carbs relatively low though with very high protein (180-200g per day, a lot more than necessary but good for satisfying hunger).

Avocado is a fruit. It is high calorie but it is also very high in nutrition w/ vitamins and minerals.

I'm asking this seriously. For a male that tall who actually goes to the gym 3x/week, I can't imagine being as thin as you are without just f***ing around there instead of actually lifting weights.
Rupp and such "go to the gym" a few times a week and "strength train," but they're not really doing much of anything there. Couple sets of squats (presumably with extremely light weights) to keep some level of anaerobic strength.
Diet soda conditions you to want/need/crave something SWEEEEET. Get over it. (It also allows you to say "well, gee, I had that diet soda so that cancels out this Snickers (tm) bar...) Also, any man-made chemical difficult to pronounce should give one pause.
I don't believe in complete abstinence from sweets. That's actually what got me into trouble in the first place. Back in April I cut out all sweets for 2 months. Felt great during that time (that's when I ran my PR), but then one day I was at Dairy Queen with friends and decided to treat myself to a blizzard. After I had just that one sweet item I started getting absolutely insane sugar cravings and developed a binging problem. It's like my body recognized I had deprived myself of sugar for so long and after I reintroduced it, it couldn't get enough of it. I guess if I really thought I could avoid all sweets for the rest of my life I might try to cut them out, but I know that's not practical. The key is moderation.
I'm mostly on board with this, but I do think we don't know everything just yet.The reason that most people who drink diet sodas are fat is because they are FAT and want to lose weight, so they drink what they think will help them lose weight. Of course it's a bit silly when they chomp down fast food along with it.

Farmers have been using artificial sweeteners for a long time for their pigs. It leaves them more hungry and makes them eat more. Pretty sure that's how it works in humans, too.
I know correlation and causation are two different things but most people who drink diet pop are fat.

The biggest thing that will make you lose weight is your diet. One day a week, eat anything you want. Don't drink ANY calories...drink all the water you want. Debatable about whether you can drink diet drinks with zero calories...best to stick with water.
On the 6 days, the main parts of your diet will be:
Lean meat prepared without any carbs on them - chicken breast, turkey, pork, lean cuts of beef.
Eggs
Legumes - lentils, black beans, pinto beans, etc.
Vegetables - Almost nothing bad here...don't go nuts with caloric avocado.
Fruit - Keep this to no more than 2 servings a day.
With 50 MPW, you may find you need to eat more carbs than the above allows (remember you can eat anything you want on the 7th day), so add more if you need to.
I currently need to lose 30 pounds, and I'm going to start eating like the above today.

I think the Flag's recipe does work; I've tried similar
ideas and it went well. Personally, I can't lose weight with just running, at least up to 60 or so a week. It's all about controlling the intake.

I can't lift weights as heavy as the big macho guys, but I believe resistance training is an essential part of any athlete's regimen. Especially since I'm now trying to lose weight, lifting helps preserve lean body mass and speeds up fat loss. After I get down to my target weight I actually plan on doing a slight bulk to gain a little more muscle mass.

Sorry didn't see this. I doubt it, I take an iron supplement and don't usually have hunger/fatigue issues when I'm not in a caloric deficit. I just think my metabolism is high enough that 2300 calories is too big of a deficit for me right now. I'll try to stick it out a few more days before I up it. Of course over the next few weeks the scale will eventually help me sort all this out and figure out an appropriate level.

wow. some good information here but lots of bad as well. i'll add just one thing ... don't think that you can eat fruit and it's a healthy sugar. it's not and you need to limit your intake of fruit as well. not cut it out but limit it severely.

Flagpole, I would be curious how your diet is going. This is the Slow-Carb diet from Tim Ferriss's book "The Four Hour Body", right?
I am currently trying another one with some similar ideas,
. Daily rather than weekly cycle, carb up after your run.
Some good (and similar) sciencey sounding stuff in both, and lots of adherents.
What I have found so far is that cutting out carbs yet still eating tons of fat/protein leads to pretty quick fat loss, and is compatible with both slow mileage and sprints/weights, but leaves me unable to run high quality sessions. Early days yet but my sense is you need to carb up a bit before the key sessions.
I wold love to hear from anyone else trying these diets. Kind of handy to have a plan ready for after Christmas, eh?

They lift heavy 2-3 times per week.

Until you're running 70 mpw don't eat like you're running 70 mpw. I use current weight x 12 for an estimate of my daily maintenance calories and current weight x 8 for an estimate of daily weight loss calories.

I've had great success with ~500 calories a day. Never bonked or ran out of energy on my runs.
Of course, I took care with eating before and then immediately afterwards just in case, but I was able to lose about 1 pound a week and have kept it all off ever sine (16 lbs to date).
You should be able to get to 140 in a month, certainly within 2 months.
Up your mileage to 80, and then 100 miles per week. Run like Cam Levins. 50 miles a week is fine if you're 60 years old though.
Eat good carbohydrates, no junk.
Drink plenty of water.

Ok...ALL you paleo people. It's time to learn. Look at the Kenyan runners and what they're eating. It ranges from 70-100% of calories coming from CARBS. They don't look fat to me. What about the rural Chinese? You know what they eat: rice, which is 90% carbs. Who do you think eats the most meat? What is the absolute fattest country on Earth? Just think about it.
To the OP: You don't need to restrict your calories at all, so long as you eat the correct foods, those being high-carb, natural, plant-based, and whole grain/brown rice. In fact, I totally guarantee that you can DOUBLE these paleo noobs' daily calories and you will reach a normal weight.
