Illinois State Meet Girl runs 16:02

Go ahead and enjoy your stupid short courses.

All the trolls on here are failing to realize the important thing here: the 16:02 in itself isn't as important as what the time itself essentially shows: a 18 second course record on one of the most hyped/ oldest courses in America. Regardless of what the time run is, be it short of a 3 mile- its still an 18 second course record which is a BIG DEAL. Imagine on the guys side: the course record is 13:51 by Craig Virgin/Chris Derrick (depending whose side of the issue you are on). Guys like Verzbicas, Jager, Torres, Sage, etc have all run on that course and don't have the record. Now imagine someone comes on this year and drops the course record by 18 seconds, runs a 13:33. Yes, its short of a 3 mile- but its the mere fact that someone has so much faster than all the studs from Illinois history that is such a big deal.

So you are saying that it should not be a big deal that a course record was slaughtered? This thread is NOT talking about every course in the state of Illinois. It is focusing on the significance of a time ran on ONE course in particular. Your argument is invalid considering the topic is not discussing courses, it is highlighting a performance that will go down in XC history.

Yeah Ilinois runs the 3 mile not 5k for xc so the course ins't short its just not a 5k course.

It's only "short" to people like you because you can only think 5k. That's like college runners saying all 5k high school races are short because they don't run 8k races. This is so stupid that some of you are stuck on this. Illinois runs 3 miles, always have, so that's what the comparison model is. No one is comparing 5k times her, got it?

What people on the post are not understanding is that the standard Illinois High school cross-country courses are 3.0 miles. With that said, Detweiller is 2.975 miles.... .025 short. The perspective is not coming from a 5k standard, so people should not be comparing this course to a 5k.

New standard in Illinois. How much faster can the state get? We will see for the years to come.

Can we all just agree that she's the fastest girl in Illinois history, a state that has produced great runners, at approximately 4789 meters? Leave it at that.

For the record: the distance of Detweiller is debated. I am not sure what measuring is done to end up with a couple hundred meters short of 3 miles, but almost every single official course measuring by the IHSA standard of course measurement (shortest possible route taken by runners) measures the course to be within about 10 meters of 3 full miles.

Having said that, the distance shouldn't matter and rather, times run at Detweiller should be judged comparatively within the context of past runners on the course. Jack Keelan's 14:05 today is objectively fast, being the 10th fastest time ever run on that course and faster than some times like Jager, 2009 Lukas, and countless other great runners. Considering Derrick, Virgin, Graves, Sage, Torres, Verzbicas, Walters and Spivey are the names ahead of him, it's fair to say the all-time field is incredibly deep.

Admittedly, the girls record was probably not as strong at Virgin's 13:50.6. It was 16:24 set in 2010 by Kayla Beattie until it was broken by Kaylee Flanagan (16:22) earlier this year, who finished fourth in 16:39 today. But Beattie was no pushover, surely, and Flanagan's run was easily considered one of the greatest Illinois performances of all time (even though she had little knowledge of the course and weaved in and out of large spaces at certain points in the race, very odd), so despite Flanagan's notoriety for peaking far too early the year, this was a big deal.

So, Perez breaking this record by 20 seconds is a freaking huge deal. I was in attendance and everyone in the crowd realized what immense history he or she was witnessing. Emma Fisher from York also broke the previous course record by running 16:15.

THANK YOU. No doubt, despite distance or whatever people would like to argue, were today's performances impressive and historical. Not only did Perez break a record, she also set the new standard for the year to come. I was in attendance at the state finals, also, and seeing her run was unreal.

I think the old course, the one from 1971-2002 was short and maybe 2.97. When they changed it up a little I think it's now officially a full 3.0

WE KNOW. DID YOU SEE THE LINK? DID YOU SEE EVERYBODY'S POST? It is .025 short, 2.9758 miles. I do not get why you can not seem to understand that even though the course is still short, Perez accomplished something amazing.

your wrong, the course today is same one from 1971 - 2002, there is a two year priod where the course was changed but then changed back (somewhere in the 2003 time priod for a short time, this was proven on the dyestat message boards sometime back).

Allow me to let Konza respond to that.

"No, it's not. It's in the same place, and is configured in much the same way, but the course is different. The major reconfiguration was in 2003, when the start and finish lines were moved north to accommodate the logistics necessary for chip timing, and, to compensate, the "triangle" was lengthened and some distance was added just before the entrance to the north part of the course. In 2005, a second "bridge" to the north part of the course (commonly known as the "triangle") was added. As far as we have been able to determine, the course hasn't changed since 2005."
