I coach in the same league that Joe Hardy runs in. The odds are never good for breaking 4 in HS but I think he has a distinct chance of doing it. Probably not this year but as a senior. He doesn't just run dominant times, he does it in a fashion that looks incredibly easy and relaxed.
Matthew Novak... ran 4:19 as a freshman last year with a 5k PR of 16:54, he has run around 16:00 this year and will probably run in the 15s
who cares. he'll be a disappointment in college and after if he even stays interested in running. look at the most recent precedents...

I will go ahead and agree with this. It's hard to call someone a failure who ran a 3:46 mile. Like...really.
This has proven very difficult to predict, but would say probably no one who did not run 1:49/4:03 the year before or some similar combination. I think athletes like, Lingren, Hunt, Pre, Hall, Rupp, Ritz, Magness, etc., didn't go sub-4 becasue they did not have any 800m credentials, but Danielson and Verzbicas proves that's wrong.
The only thing I can see that all of the sub-4 guys had in common was great coaching, which is something no one ever talks about. Even exceptional H.S. coaches who have produced 4:10 milers are out of their league when it comes to the planning, training and mental prep for 3:59.

Blake Haney will have a chance. 4:12 1600m as a frosh, 4:08 as soph at Dream Mile. Kid is very strong, has great range (8:54 3200m) and will definitely be in the position to break 4 by his senior year.

how is this even a question?? Bernie Montoya is going to do it this year. 4:14 as a soph, then 4:01 as a Junior. He has insane speed and kick, runs 1:52 for 800, 8:48 for 3200, and is top 5 in the country for XC right now too. he looked pretty smooth on that 4:01 too.

Did any of you watch this race? Burcham ran 4:02 for about 1620 meters. It was his poor planning that got him in bad positions and made him run in lane 3, but still yet, he ran way over a mile in 4:02 as a junior. If he is smarter about it, he runs 3:58 this year.

When I say barely trains, I mean compared to most of the kids his age running that fast. His coach still provides a solid program for him to get him the times, but won't burn him out before he reaches college.

Bob Timmons was not a great coach. He overworked a truly gifted Jim Ryun who had the ability to withstand the punishment and not break down
