well if this is true, then why are there so many disappointments after championship races?....Most of the competitors know who has the best kicks yet they don't run their own race, instead falling into the hands of best kickers and yet the winners not necessarily the best runners for that distance. We see it all the time....410 for the 1500 in the big tens, seems to most the runners would be better off running their own race. I agree the best kickers should hope for slower pace, but for everyone to do it...seems to me....we have bunch of runners who are afraid to put it on the line.

For the guys that won the medals or made the team they did the right thing by sitting and kicking. It's the guys who have no chance in a sit and kick race who just sit in the pack and then get destroyed that I don't understand. Ritz, for example, had nothing to lose in London by pusing the pace. After one or two slow laps he should have gone to the front. Of course this may have screwed things up for Farah and Rupp so he may not have done it for that reason.

Some of you seem to be confused as to the purpose of a race. It is to be the first to reach the finish line. Any tactic within the official rules of the sport employed to achieve the objective of finishing first is fine by me.

I propose that muscle fiber testing be mandatory. Anyone with a disproportionate composition of fast twitch fibers will have to pick a shorter event or submit to a surgery to remve offending muscle type. Likewise those with a disproportionate share of slow twitch will be required to move up in distance, etc. This is only fair. Why stop at muscle fiber? Let's test VO2 Max and level that playing field also. It would be like stock car racing. Awesome. Let me grab a beer and mullet.

In fact, why not just have each athlete run alone for time and then compare times for placing? Oh, that's right because it is a RACE and the first one across the line wins. I know, how about participation ribbons for most laps led?

This has to be one of the most asinine threads and arguments I've ever read about running. I personally don't care if you pace yourself or kick it the end. The point of a race is to see who gets to the finish line first not to see who leads the longest. Are you people for real?

agreed - and I would add, you do all that training only to run slower then you do in practice. Must be disheartening to those trying to improve.

It wasn't his first competitive 10k and was not his first professional race. So the difference is...? Exactly pea brain, it didn't make a difference so why does everyone make such a big deal of it.

Solinsky lost to Lagat at US Nationals last year despite running a 3:56 last 1600m. Last 4 laps were 59's, if I recall. Rupp faded badly on the last lap. Say what you will about Solinsky, but the guy has balls the size of cantalopes.

No, the equivalent in baseball might be throwing intentional balls. The equivalent in basketball is intentionally fouling.

What I have learned from Letsrun is that people do not like sit and kick races and they do not like time trial type races.

They just like to complain and this gives them a chance to complain about every race.

Which begs the question- did they come to Letsrun as idiots or does it make us stupid???

That 10,000 had a rabbit for the majority of the race. After the rabbit dropped out Rupp was leading for a bit before Solinsky took over. That was no kick, that was just running away from Rupp.
