he is only taking 5 days off a short vacation, and lots of the people running under 62 minutes for the half marathon are putting their jobs/careers on hold to concentrate on running.

a better question is how many of the people that are capable of sub 62 have a full time job other than running? my guess is low under 10%, it is mostly full time runners at that level, or no more than a part time job.

japan is a pretty good track country.

and they may be the cleanest of them all.

while the caribbean, usa, spaniards, morroccans, algerians, turks dabble big time, legally and illegally.

japan has a couple guys near 10 flat in the 100.

won medals in the 200 junior.

has a basket of pretty good 400mh.

nothing till you hit the 10k, they have what 20 or 30 ranked guys, abeit not in the top 20.

Americans don't run enough VO2max workouts.

It would be interesting to see how many US runners would break 62 if there was a road 1/2 included in NCAA's.

The Japanese are not currently as good as the US in the Half Marathon. They even have a race too prove it.

I bet the majority of people capable of going sub 62 aren't aware of it because they've either never tried distance running or have never put in the miles & years it takes. Running is a tiny slice of the sports world. What percentage of the population do you think has run further than 5 miles? 10%? I'm sure the other 90% of the population includes more potential sub 62ers than the running population.

Those who want it enough and enjoy the process will do it and only their own satisfaction matters. Did Phil Coppess care what his coworkers at the plant or his neighbors thought about his ability to run 2:10 for a marathon? Probably not. He had no degree and was focused on his working career and family. He worked hard and played hard, something that people largely seem averse to nowadays. It's never a mutually exclusive thing, you can run fast and have all the rest. You just have to have the guts and the willingness to make the most of the time you have and establish the right boundaries and stick to them. People who think that you can't run your best while having a career, social life, whatever else are just weak, soft excuse-makers for poor life decisions. The team infrastructure in Japan probably helps with those who are more towards the fringe, but there are notables who succeed outside of it there. If you surround yourself with the right people in life, friends and family who support your pursuit of goals in any area of life, then you'll have the right support structure to do anything you want, including run fast. In our society, too many people just join in and follow along, expecting life to keep handing them advantages, rather than become leaders even just within their own lives and make their dreams become reality.
