So apparently the NYC Marathon 2012 will be shown on ESPN2. My initial thought regarding this was: WHY? Then I thought some more about it. And still I think: WHY?
Virtually no one is going to watch some several thousand hobby joggers slog thru the 5 boroughs. There is a reason why all major networks have stopped televising T&F long time ago. NO ONE CARES.
TV time would be much better spend to show another repeat of this years glorious CROSSFIT games, an event where, you know, REAL MAN compete. Yes, real man with muscles.
There is a good solution for Marathons, show a webcast or something. But don't waste airtime on that.
Dude, here is your reality check (Nielson Ratings).
CROSSFIT
2012 Reebok Crossfit Games (10:00) - ESPN2
0.352 million viewers, #15; 0.181 million adults 18-49 (0.1 rating), #15
2012 Reebok Crossfit Games (10:30) - ESPN2
0.318 million viewers, #16; 0.160 million adults 18-49 (0.1 rating), #16
TRACK AND FIELD
Time Net Show 18-49 Rating/Share Viewers (Millions)
7:00 NBC U.S. Olympic Trials 1.2/4 4.48
This was actually down 20% from the Track Olympic Trials in 2008, but, still TWELVE TIMES Crossfit.
Just the facts.
Now that was Track and Field and marathon jogging is marathon jogging. Even the WR holder in the marathon runs half as fast as Usain Bolt does. Does anybody REALLY care about WATCHING marathons (outside the posters on this website)?
But Crossfit is not exactly ready to take on Track and Field, Swimming, Gymnastics, Figure Skating, Skiing and such.
Seems to me that crosfitters and marathoners are basically the pot calling the kettle black.
