I do think retirement at this point would be the best option. Time to move on with life. But I can understand how he wants to give it one last shot.
His last shot was last season. He really needs to just stop embarrassing himself

Dan Lincoln(of Arkansas/former steeple AR fame) is coaching these days in the Portland area. Cragg is with him so obviously he should have no problem with a total flake like Webb.
My money is on Schumacher. There really isn't a whole lot of options left for him

No chance AlSal will take him back. At this point, that is over and done with. Huge mistake going back to VA until his career was finished.

Alberto said that they left on good terms and that if he wanted to come back he would take him. That said in an article last year when webb switched coaches

Can you link? If that's true then I would bet money on Salazar, mostly because of Centrowitz.
Otherwise I'd say Rowland would be the best bet, he's a damn good coach. Webb could train with Symmonds, that would be sick.

Why would he want to do that? Especially after bringing on Centro?

Johnson coached Malmo to a steeplechase AR and a 3:40 1500, so maybe he could do some good with Webb.
Glad to see Webb finally realized that as he moves up to 5K and 10K he shouldn't be training with an 800 specialist who will never be as fast of an 800 runner as Alan was.

No he didn't.
Johnson was a horrible coach. He was fired because no one wanted to be coached by him.

Then why on earth is he being recirculated?
You're the one starting the rumor. Perhaps you should explain?
From what he has been telling people on the side it is Schumachers group and he plans on moving up in distance. This next year or two is going to be awesome. My sources are very accurate so go ahead and quit the debate.
There have been talks with Schumacher. Nothing finalized yet.
Schumacher has: broken Solinsky, past-his-prime Teg, and a headcase Webb. Yuck.

I thought you said in that old thread that you were sad Johnson was fired -- ?
I'll say this, Harry Johnson was one messed up control freak -- and a truly distasteful person.
I thought someone said that Nike exiled him to S. Korea, in order to get rid of him, and in order for Hollister to save face by saving Johnson's tail...seeing as Hollister had been a South Eugener, and had caused Johnson to leave his job at South.
Johnson had a bad reputation around town. And his kid was an obnoxious prick too. The kid may have grown out of it. Johnson...exiled for the good of all.
Somehow, he ran an amazing high school program...which may have had something to do with if you get enough bodies in the door and meat grind them young enough...a good portion survive. And I am sure he was really loyal to his high school athletes...he seemed to love to be the Pied Piper.
None of his high school runners really did much after high school.
His 30 plus year absence from track or coaching might be a tad bit of an impediment to his coaching.
Last I heard he is retired near the Oregon coast.
The floating of his name in relation to Webb is as close to insanity as anything I've ever seen on this board.
Pete Julian
If Webb goes to Schumacher, will he be training with German Fernandez? That would be interesting to see.

This was my first guess considering the 109 mile week a while ago and the 8k race recently. He never seemed to get the speed back this year, and after the trials he showed enough honest self evaluation to indicate he might make a move up to keep his career going.
Wish him the best - a little curious how it will go since it will be such a different training environment than what he has experienced with a such a large group of runners much stronger than him.
Rowland would be an excellent choice as well.

Maybe because he didn't sell his house when he left last time and didn't want to take a huge hit? Or maybe just because he needs some people to run with.
Webb lived in my old neighborhood when he was in Portland. He sold his house when he left. I hope the move back works out well for him and he can get back on track.
Wow. I don't know who you are but you've got Johnson down perfect. I came from excellent high school and college programs. The seven years preceding, and the eight years following my year under the Johnson Regime (the best way to describe it) was an absolutely incredible experience. My year-long conscription and forced servitude to "the program" (a word used by Johnson in place of a first person pronoun) was bizarre - and that was the kindest word I could think of. Johnson was someone who didn't know a thing about athletic training and had absolutely zero rapport with the athletes that he was supposed to be coaching.I've been lucky enough to know many of the best coaches in the world. Johnson's temperament wasn't anything like any of them. Great coaches get into coaching for the benefit of others. Johnson was in it for himself, oops, I mean for the glory of The Program. "The Program" as he would boast over, and over, an over, was too complex for us to understand, it would take at least a year or more to see the wisdom of his brilliant coaching. He and Hollister would tell you that at least once a week.To this day, I do not understand The Program. Neither does anyone else.Like I said, when the athletes were eventually given an opportunity to choose their own coaches, NOT ONE of them chose to be coached by Harry. Not ONE. A very damning indictment. His nickname was "Little Hitler" for a reason.

No. I felt bad for him.

Bullseye.
