No, it would be FAR more risky to not have them. Let's say part of the fractured bone slips. It doesn't have to be much. Just a sliver really. Boom. LV's spinal cord is severed and he'll never walk or feel his arms or legs again.

That's also the risk of going in and taking the pieces out. You screw up when your playing with dude's vertebrae, and you can cause irreversible damage.

Only worth to take them out once everything is very stable and full muscular strength is back in the neck - and only in cases of extreme discomfort or for athletic/flexibility purposes (not most doctors' priority).

You know you don't feel metal screws in your bone, right? There aren't the same types of pain receptors IN bone. What you mostly feel when you break one is the receptors around it.

Let's say his recovery is smooth - would he be susceptible to further injury in another bike crash? In other words, might bike racing be too dangerous for him now?

I really like this kid - he is the real deal.

Thats the Centennial/Greenway/Santa Fe trail system. It actually spans about 50 or 60 some odd miles from up past Monument all the way down to Pueblo.

I run this same area quite a bit and was always hoping I would run into LV...but no luck. Have run into Roberet Cheseret a few times though.

On topic though, it's great to see how quick LV is bouncing back. Hopefully he'll be able to refind the coordination he needs for running fast and economically!

That is awesome, almost makes me want to move to Colorado just to run on that trail.

Quite a few of my friends have plates/screws/etc. in them, mostly in their legs. So I'm not a doctor but what I have understood is that if there is a higher risk of injury it is very slight. However if you have a re-injury the presence of the old metal can make things more difficult. Not sure how that relates to spinal issues but that's what my friend's with tib-fibs have told me.

I'm glad to see he is doing well and hoping for a full recovery.

I would say that in some ways biking would be better for him, especially at first - that is, unless he is in another crash. That's because the pounding of running is way harder on the spinal column than cycling is. On the other hand, elite cycling requires riders to bend their back/neck pretty extremely to be aerodynamic.

Of course, riding fast is more risky as far as SERIOUS injury goes simply because of the difference in speeds and proximity to traffic. Few runners fall and break their neck, but if you flip off your bike/hit something at 30 mph. Both running and riding puts a person at risk for getting hit by a car, though biking probably increases the risk because it's often necessary to ride with traffic.

All that to say, I don't think there will be a huge difference as far as re-injury goes, simply the same risks that were there previously, though cycling would probably be easier on his neck for the time being.

If I were LV, I would return to triathlon training for now because I would guess he will be cleared to do swim/bike training before he's cleared to run a lot. But... maybe that video shows that he has progressive/aggressive doctors.
