This. But not silver.

The lesson for Rupp is stop making excuses. Rupp does not have bronchitis. If he did his season would be over. His 13:09 proves he is not anywhere near as fast as 2011, notwithstanding his silver metal.
Oh, and proves Rupp's sickness is all in his head. "I am sick coach. Cough, Cough. I can't run." An excuse.
The original point appears to be that Lagat is finishing his season strong, despite barely missing a medal after faltering (nearly tripping) in the last 100 of the Olympic final, but Rupp has DNFd in a 1500m, after training well all week with Centro, who blew the doors off him, and then is a complete non-factor in a slow-paced 5000m, albeit a quick finish.
Lagat should be devastated, since it might be his last opportunity, but no.
Lagat is 38, and Rupp is 26.
So Lagat is obviously doing something right, given the fact that he is (supposedly) in the final act of a long career, coming off a tough loss of a last chance OG medal, and Galen is the one having problems with his season of late. So maybe he (or Alberto) need to take note on how Lagat does it.

He's run 12:58 this year... faster than Lagat.
LOL at "metal".

You do realize that you're supposed to have your best race AT the Olympics, right?

Rupp and others should always have a reason for a bad race. I mean it's either you gave up, you were fatigued/past your peak, or something is wrong. When would there ever not be a reason or "excuse" for a bad race.
It shows severe lack of character as a person and lack of intelligence when people make posts like yours.
Why does lagat doing well make everyone turn on Rupp for not running well. You people are idiots. Side note lagat would have medaled had he not tripped at the end of the Olympic 5000. That's ultimately what cost him the medal.
12:58 was Rupp last good race. It very much part of last year, even though it occurred this year. Rupp hasn't been the same runner since the 12:58.
Rupp's Metal was well deserved.
Unless you're a big favorite, a silver "metal" (medal to non-retards) is ALWAYS a good race.

Bad year young man,

Not to mention he plans to be back next year, my guess trying to break 27 minutes, and then he'll try at least one marathon. I'm sure if that goes well, he'll be thinking about the Rio Olympics as well.
I wish.
If he was willing to walk away from the shorter stuff (which I think he will after he feels he's put down close to his best 5000 times - probably next year) and adjust his training/volume, no doubt he could go sub-27. Probably within a season.
And yes, Lagat could be a fearsome championship marathoner. IF he performed at the distance, he would have some of the craziest career range ever seen.
True enuff on the year, but Rupp's trial win was still the best race featuring our two top guys, and it's a major chink in Bernard's 2012 resume.
anyhow, I heart Lagat.

Lagat wasn't tripped.
He tried to dart in front of Koech to get around Iguider and was tangled in the process causing him to stumble.
This was caused by his own actions.
To say that he would have won a medal if he hadn't been tripped is like saying he would have won a medal if he raced better.
Rupp's 12:58 was great, but to say that it was a better race than Lagat's 12:59 yesterday is a joke.
Lagat won a 1500 silver medal in 2004.
Manzano won a 1500 silver medal in 2012.
How is Lagat "still" the mid-d boss in the US again?
If bronchitis means one of various illnesses characterized by fluid in the throat and even lungs, it can last a long time. I was affected for weeks by that condition this spring, though not seriously and could race okay before it was completely gone, but was very seriously affected the previous year, having to stop and hack up a lung frequently for weeks as I maintained my hundred mile weeks. It was impossible to run fast and it was quite painful. Honestly, Rupp did not look healthy before the race at the line and a healthy Rupp from earlier in the year would have had no difficulty in maintaining that pace. Lagat was not at his best, not having that much of a kick at the very end, though enough to run close to 55 at the end of a sub 13 race, but he surely could have kept up in a 12:50 race, as he intended to do. The field just did not cooperate and he was not as aggressive in moving to the front or 2nd in the bell lap, which he needs to do. Still, he is amazingly consistent and always there, near the front, at the end. He was surely medal bound, maybe even a silver, at the Olympics before the trip.
Do you guys think Rupp' s recent battle with bronchitis could be related to his well documented history of thyroid problems?
Lagat will move up to the 10,000 next year and have a good season. Watch out Salazar!
