The unofficial record by Josh Harris of Australia in 5:02. Probably non FAT and no one checked to see if all beer was gone or something, but still pretty good.

5000m - 2012 Briggs Athletic Classic, Hobart (17th - 14:28.21)

My bet is any Irish 1500 runner that can break 3:50 could destroy this.

I don't think that he opened his own beer. that said, he has pretty good chugging skills, which could improve his times by 15 seconds versus an average drinker. chugging (truly pouring the beer down your throat) isn't something that everyone can do.

Someone should sponsor a beer games. Imagine chug a beer before and after every sprint. It would be fun to watch

My team in college holds a beer mile the first week of fall training every year. I transferred in as a sophomore and had no idea what a beer mile was until about 3 hours beforehand when they told me it was mandatory for all freshman and new runners on the team. I had no idea what I was doing going into it, but it probably ended up being one of the best efforts of my career. Ran 5:40 with a 62 on the last lap. Literally couldn't feel anything and felt like I was floating the entire lap. The old school record was 6:20 so one of the guys was curious as to how good of a time that was and stumbled upon the beermile.com site the next day. At the time, (this was in 2003) the record was 5:40. I never ran it again, but sort of wish I had given it another shot to apply the stuff I learned from the first time. (went out way too slow the first lap, 71ish)

Really hope they film Nick's record attempt. Should be interesting to see how close to 4 flat he can go.

I want to specificially point out that your "irish 1500 runner" fact is false.

As I have a friend who is a runner on my old college team who is irish and has run 3:46 as of recent and lets just say he made nationals, I don't wanna give him away. He had a hard time beating me, I only have a 4:30 mile time and 8:45 3k time. We both ran in the 6:40's. He barely beat me the last 100m.

People can underestimate how hard it is to down that 3 and 4th beer while running sub 65 sec laps...if you can even run that quick to begin with. Running isnt the hard part, you get a 10 sec. - 50 sec. recovery, but your not really recovering cuz you cant breath while chugging beers and you cant chug beer when your out of breath. There's a method and it does require some bit of craziness, talent, and tactics.

I estimate by nick symmonds chugging on his first beer being around 9 secs. will get slower by about 5-15secs. per beer. He can run sub 55 laps though. I think he'll be around 5. Still a great accomplishment and I think he could get the wr.

I totally agree...as I have posted before on this site, where I know it is like screaming alone in the desert...the beer mile is for low class people and alcoholics.

One of the indicators of alcoholism (and there are many, many, many degrees and manifestations of it) is planning to get drunk.

Nick is no longer a college student. He's a man. A man who has tried hard to build his own personal brand and "bring the product."

I enjoy many a good brew in a healthy and responsible way.

The beer mile isn't. Someone is going to get hurt or worse from one of these some day.

The guys that have responded with the milk mile have made a good choice, one that is an alternative and just as funny.

The 5:02 by Josh Harris must not have been deemed official for whatever reason (if you go by the official rules listed I'm not sure he breaks any, but between getting handed the beers and the impression that he didn't quite appear to finish most of them I wouldn't disagree). But he is listed as #2 with 5:16. Done around the same time too?

I can think of two reasons Simmons would do this: Because it's running, and because it's beer.

To A Duck: One of the signs of alcoholism is planning to get drunk? Are you kidding me? So basically every single person in the Western World has been an alcoholic at some point? That is idiotic. And also, how is the milk mile any better? If anything, it is much worse. Instead of maybe puking, finishing four beers--which isn't a lot for most "young" people--you end up vomiting everywhere and being miserable. Chugging some beer with your friends at a beer mile, then maybe going to a party afterwards is fun. Chugging milk or eggnog until you vomit and then calling it a night is not. And if you don't think that the beer mile is funny, you've either never seen one or have no sense of humor. And who cares if he's a man? Are you arguing that since he is a man he is too mature to pound beers if he wants? That's funny, because before he's a man the law says he's too immature to even drink beer. Do people only have that 1 year period between turning 21 and graduating from college to have a little fun? And as for his "brand," I think this would make most runners respect him more, especially college runners, who are a significant portion of the fan base. And one does not typically vomit during the beer mile if one is capable of the world record in it.

A Duck must be have the greatest life. No sex, no alcohol and then comes home from work and watches fox news and skims through letsrun to see what he can hate it.

He didn't open his beers. Nothing in the rules about being handed the beers. You simply have to wait until the runner enters transition to open. I'd think that someone can open for you.

the beer mile doesn't let you really chug, which is a travesty. I'm not sure if you can chug a beer from a bottle or can without modifying the delivery in six seconds. (Ahh, I just figured out the trick to skirt the rules.)

To anyone who thinks this is incredibly irresponsible, it is just another challenge. Anything to excess is bad for you, and of course alcohol is worse.

The Chunder Mile is an entirely different category of race. You have to do imperial pints (568 mL) instead of cans/bottles (355 mL), and chundering is encouraged, rather than penalized.

as noted, beer handlers are allowed. they can open beers prior to a runner arriving, and hand them off in the exchange/consumption zone.

as has also been noted, quality as a runner and quality as a drinker don't lend to immediate beer mile success. our fastest guy was a mediocre runner (especially in terms of his quarter-mile speed) and a mediocre at best drinker.

a unique and enjoyable event but, from what i remember, always rather painful running.
