It's official: Fernandez joins Schumacher!

Haha... I can't believe you just posted that after Rupp won a SILVER MEDAL in the 10000.

Fernandez has never done anything to ever suggest he can run anything close to that for 5k. At the same age he is now, Bekele had already run 12:37 and 26:20 world records and had won a world championship and an olympic gold and silver. Many other african runners have run waaaay faster than Fernandez at an even younger age and many have them have never run too much faster. I just don't see Fernandez being able to develop much more than Rupp has and especially with a training group much more prone to injuries than Salazar's. I would give Fernandez a 12:54 and a 26:40ish 10k like Rupp ran IF he manages to stay healthy.

I predict we aren't going to see anything particulallry noteworthy from GF. A few good races? Yss. But the next coming of Rupp he isn't.

It's funny how everyone acts like Bumbalough is so much less talented than Jager, Teg, Solinsky, Rupp, Fernandez, et al, but that's just silly. The guy ran an 8:49 winning two mile (over Kiptoo, who had run sub-4, went on to run 8:45 and get top ten in NCAA cross the next year)as a junior in high school. He got second in Footlocker despite being very sick, he was injured or had mono or something his senior year, which knocked him out of Arcadia and any of the really competitive races, and still finished high school with 1:52/4:06/8:49 PRs. That 2 mile PR should have been quite a bit lower. Then, in college (which has notoriously done a piss poor job of developing good runners and getting them to perform at all of late), he dealt with a slew of injuries, trained very little, and still managed to get 7th (I think...) in NCAA cross, and run 13:30/3:38. I'm not saying he's as talented as German Fernandez, who is extraordinary, but Bumby was certainly an Evan Jager level talent who didn't quite have things go his way early on. I bet he runs close to 13 flat within the year, and I wouldn't be surprised if GF isn't too far behind him, if at all.

Either way, bumbo doesnt beat lomong, Rupp, Solinsky, or probably Derrick in the 5k to make it to rio... Sorry everything you say about bumbo, Derrick has done even better, across the board... What do you think Derrick is just going to jump right into marathon running? Bumbo's time came and went... O

Chris Derrick paid me $10. It all went according to plan.

I think we will see him become a major factor in the US and flirt with greatness internationally. Good thing the poor coaching and injuries held him back , he is not burnt out. He was fast at a young age , very fast. Please look back at his high school times and 1st year of college.

His development will be an interesting test for Schu's capabilities as a coach.

Personally I would have wanted to train with the best, oh well hopefully he doesn't have to settle for the steeple

What is a slicer medalist? That sounds dangerous. I don't think German should train with one.

Fernandez is done. It doesn't matter which group he joins as he is too fragile to succeed.

I don't know if that is too fair to say. We all know that Smith ran him into the ground in college and had him running injured in pointless races. I just don't think that joining Schumaker's group is the way to go because every single runner he coaches ends up injured under his watch. I can't imagine why he wouldn't try to get in Salazar's group. There he would have access to all the technology advantages Rupp and Farah use to stay injury free. There is no guarantee he would stay healthy 100% of the time (like Ritz hasn't been able to) but still, he would have a much better opportunity to run and consistently improve rather than be injury sidelined on Schumaker's meat grinder program.

When these guys sig, they give them a choice of groups and in many cases Nike pushes them to choose Schumacher or Salazar or no deal...

Does it say a lot that most choose Schumacher even though Salazar has gold and silver medalist?

Fernandez was given a choice in signing with Nike. He chose Schumacher. Ask him why.
