Sage Canaday - How long until he obliterates all ultra records?

nothing about running 50+ miles (or however the hell far ultra races are) seems "fun" or "natural" to me...but to each his own. congrats on the recent races Sage.

#3 My point remains the same. Dont try to get notoriety for sports that are recreational in nature compared to the elite sports of the world. World records are meaningless if there are only a handful of people competing.

His accomplishments at Mt Wash and WR50 are incredibly impressive. To break a course record by 9 minutes is an amazing feat - as is being the fastest American ever to run Mt Washington.

Ultra/trail/mountain/ uphill running are not even comparable to the road and track - they require completely different skills and strengths that not every elite runner has. Go overseas where it's huge and try to race someone like Kilian Jornet.

And for the record, as far as Olympian elites not taking part in these kinds of races - Shalane Flanagan competed in the Pikes Peak Ascent finishing somewhere in the 80's and over 40 minutes slower than the course record.

Also, Canaday beat running sensations Marco De Gasperi and Max King - a 3xOlympic Trials Qualifier World Mt Running Champ and 2:14 marathoner - in his first uphill race at Mt Wash. Luck? Definitely not.

Unfortunately, these races are more popular on an international level than they are national so it's hard to comprehend how great Canaday's recent accomplishments are.

Saying that Elite Marathon runners would be great Ultra Runners is like saying the fastest 100m guys are the fastest 400m guys.

Look you morons, Sage is just not another 2nd tier marathoner that moved up to the marathon because he can't hack it there. His switch is like that of the young Evan Jager's move to the steeplechase this year, where he went from our 20th best 5K runner to the record holder in the steeple. It's obvious to anyone that knows anything about the sport that Sage has the tools to excel at the longer distances.

Idiot, Matt Carpenter set the Leadville record in 2005 when he was 41. Matt Carpenter started running ultras late in his career when he was past his prime just like track stars 10-20 years ago used to move up to the marathon late in their career when they have lost their speed. Sage is coming to the sport just when he is reaching his aerobic capacity, he will destroy this record.

In fact, he is running Pike Peak Ascent soon which used to be Matt Carpenter's bread and butter event. Look for him to go under 2 hours here and obliterate the record.

Some 2nd tier runners like Timothy Olson and Mike Morton runs some decent times on Badwater and Western States and you think that means Sage won't touch those times? Sage will make you look like a fool within the next 2-3 years.

He beat some great guys for sure. This is one race, he has done nothing competitive beyond that. So stop riding his Cack.

Before you start saying he is better than some athletes you first have to realize it takes time to be accomplished, just to beat someone who is accomplished one time means literally NOTHING

You'll find kindred spirits in the ultra world. The types of people that the world needs more of..Those that will give you what they have if you need it. Why? Because not only is it the right thing to do, but somewhere down the line, you will be in the same position where someone needs something. You just do it.

I will add to what Old Ultra Guy said, "Bring your friends, just don't bring the marathon mentality to, our races" I am sick and tired of new ultra runners thinking its going to be the same as their road marathons. No, there is no mile markers or water every 2 miles. Stop complaining your Garmin read 50.6 miles and not just 50.

Don't know the guy and not heavily into the ultra/mountain scene, but always excited when someone "new" can come along and shake things up.

Apples and oranges. Ultra Marathons are a different sport altogether. It's almost like saying people who run long distance are just trying to avoid all the 200m dash sensations. Why compare?

Well, let's see: if beating an accomplished runner once means LITERALLY nothing, then it would be unreasonable to infer that someone like Canaday (who's beaten these guys once) is probably a better ultra runner than I (who've beaten these guys never).

But in fact it IS reasonable to infer that Canaday is a better ultra runner than I. (As it happens, I haven't been able to run for nearly 40 years, but that doesn't affect the reasoning involved here.) Hence beating accomplished runners literally means SOMETHING.

I'm glad to see Sage do well.

No doubt ultras aren't as competitive as marathons and maybe he wouldn't do as well if they were more competitive. However, it's possible that ultra distances are someone's "sweet spot" when the marathon isn't. Just like there are guys who could never be competitive in the 1500 who are very competitive in the 10000, Sage may just be better suited for ultra distances.

Anyhow, why would you knock a guy for finding a way to keep running and having fun whatever the distance is?

Don't get my wrong, I like that Canaday has made the switch to running ultras. Some guys in the 2:15-2:20 range have crossed over periodically or made the switch to running ultras (i.e. Mike Wardian) and have had some success, but are not superior to the established ultra runners.

Yes Carpenter started running 50 and 100 milers late in his career, but he is a legend on Pikes Peak and has a legendary course record at Leadville. Check out his stats from the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon.

He set the ascent record of 2:01 during the marathon! He has won every year (either the ascent or marathon) that he has entered since 1993. He won both races in 2 of those years.

I would hardly call Timothy Olson a 2nd tier runner. Not any more. He would not have run that fast on a hot day, but he still beat some elite runners on that day (Sandes, Clark, Mackey etc.) If he is 2nd tier for winning Western States then I guess so is Scott Jurek, Geoff Roes, and Killian Jornet (arguably the best ultra runner in the world the last 2-3 years). Did I mention that Killian is running the Pikes Peak Marathon this year in an attempt to break Carpenter's record of 3:16. Let's just see if Sage's ascent time is as fast as Killian's ascent during the marathon.
