When David Rudisha was growing up in Youngstown, Ohio he had a paper route. Every day after school he would walk the 3.17 miles from the start of the route to the end. The last house on that route was the home of a girl he had a crush on. Her name was Emily Waingarten and she was the most popular girl in school - largely because she was insanely gorgeous, just a beautiful, beautiful girl.
Sometimes Rudisha would run his paper route in order to get to Emily's house quicker so that he could spend more time gazing into her pretty blue eyes. Over the years he got faster and faster at running the 3.17 miles to Emily's house.
In David's senior year, Emily suddenly became quite ill. It was so sudden that David didn't know about it until he was already out on his paper route for the day. When he heard she was dying he sprinted to her house. Unfortunately, Emily died when David was 800 meters from her house. He never go to say goodbye.
On that day, David left Youngstown and moved to Kenya - where Emily said they would always go to live once they were married.
David has sworn he will never run 3.17 miles again. He will only run 800 meters as a tribute to Emily.
How fast could David Rudisha of Youngstown, Ohio run the 5K? The world will never know.
