Canada has this stupid idea that by making athletes get an A+ standard, they'll somehow elevate the quality of their athletes. Of course, since it doesn't work like that, they're just going to leave athletes at home.
This year is kind of enforcing their idea. There was a big stink about the standards 4 years ago but they didn't budge, now more people have met them than ever. Their shining example is Reid Coolsaet who was left off last cycle and worked harder to get there this year. Then of course they would also argue that their high standards have contributed to the rise of Cam Levins. To be clear, I don't think the high standards cause faster times. It's just such a good argument from their standpoint though because having high standards makes it seem like they really care. It also kind of trumps up their own self-confidence and automatically puts them in more of an authoritative position because they have the power to say "no" to some really fast people. It also allows them to watch the Olympics without their national pride taking a hit by seeing no Canadians in the finals. "Yes there are 2 Americans there, but they have lower standards. Our boys will work harder and get them in 4 years." Then they all pat each other on the back for how much they care.
