Sounds like a great idea. ESPN relies on twitter for a lot of them so if we start sending them tons of tweets they will pay more attention to track and field.

I am glad some people are into this. I think we should just tweet away. I also am not surprised that some people are so negative, thats Letsrun. I wish I had posted this board a month earlier but we might as well do what we can. We could try promoting watching track at the Olympics. Those memories really do stick with people

I've been trying to do this on a small scale this year through Facebook. Since late winter/early spring I've frequently been posting updates about what's going on in the track world, trying to get people interested in the our athletes BEFORE the Olympics. I'm a big track geek, but the vast majority of my Facebook friends aren't, so I thought it might be a potential way to gather a few new fans.
I haven't had an overwhelming amount of interest from people, but I've received some positive attention and appreciation from some friends, family, and acquaintances who wouldn't normally be interested in the sport. So it's....something, ya know?
I figure we each average a couple hundred Facebook friends give or take. And before someone starts preaching: "Why do you need that many Facebook friends? They aren't really your friends. You just want attention...blah, blah, blah." Just save it. That's not the point. It's a fine medium through which to promote the sport on a more personal level. And if all of us do it....well that's something that doesn't take very long or cost any money and it might actually draw some extra attention to the sport.
The sport doesn't need to be promoted. It's doing just fine, thank you.
People can't relate to running. Most of us have experience with Little League or Pop Warner Football but there is no running equivalent for kids. When Little Leaguers grow up they can still participate in baseball as a fan. Where would the fan base for running come from? Running is mostly a participant sport. Ever watch a marathon? Try to cheer on a friend as they run by? Unless it's an out and back, you get to cheer for them once. Twice if you run across the park and catch them before the finish line.
Marafhons are dumb. Track is where it's at.
