Agree that sub 13:20 for Webb is unlikely + very hard to see him beating Lagat, Rupp or Lomong at 5000m anyway, but what if he runs, say, 13:32, then uses his result to petition into the 10000m at trials?

At the trials 10000m Rupp is pretty much a lock, Derrick looks solid, but after that Ritz will have to be going for the "A" and I think Webb would have a decent shot at drafting on Ritz through 9600m in 26:45, then outkicking him to make the team. Just a thought.

Damn, forgot about Lomong, and I was assuming Derrick would stick to the 10k. There's no way he's going to beat Lomong in a 5k unless he loses count of his laps again.

Anyone know what time the race is scheduled to be run? According to the website, the times will be released on the 15th. Sounds like a great way to increase fan support for our elite: we'll let you know a meet schedule the day before, so you better wait to make other plans for a Saturday night. Man, you'd think USATF had a hand in the management.

Could he arrange for FAT at the 1500 mark? Go out hard for the first 1500, get the "A" standard for that, recover briefly, and continue to get the 5000 qualifier.

guys I'm so excited to see this miler finally give up his hopes and dreams and run a longer distance race because the majority of us here prefer races of 5k and longer!

Interesting to see Webb make this leap. Almost sure he won't get the Olympic A standard in this race unless something cosmic is going on, but I can see him getting the Trials standard. At any rate, makes one wonder, with this 5k eventual detour, how he would have fared had he stuck with Salazar's group, with Galen Rupp and company. Maybe it wasn't working out with Salazar's group because Webb was so focused on a 1500m comeback but in foresight maybe he would have been better off.

64 second lap is not going to break Webb. Alan Webb could eat a candy bar and still run 64 seconds.
