BYU has an incredible class, definitely tops in the nation for middle distance. Should be great to see what they can do in a few years! Maybe a 9:25 DMR in the making?

Reading comprehension must not be your guys' strong suit. Agree or disagree, the post made perfect sense. As to the 9:25, if that's the over under, I'm all in at over! If you don't understand what that means I'll explain it.

You try going two-years without running and then trying to get back into it.

I ran at BYU my freshman year, went on a mission and ran maybe 5-times in two years (did ride a bike most days and walked a lot), and then tried to get in shape afterwards. I seemed to have gotten more speed (probably due to me walking 5-billion flights of stairs) but I could never get my endurance back it seemed.

If you think it is such an advantage then go join the peace-corp or something and return later to run.

Agreed that most top teams experience major drop-out/lack of progression but BYU is especially bad. They are the talent graveyard of Utah. Guys like Bybee, Goodwin, and Golden Harper should have been NCAA team champs. BYU's only distance guys making nats in track this year are graduating (minus Ward). They are deep and talented and will make top 5 when the stars align every 5 years or so but I think BYU will never truly be on the level of Stanford, Oregon, OSU, Wisco, Arkansas etc. Eyestone is a horrible coach...his guys are running hard from Sept. trying to make the team and he hopes enough survive that he has a decent team in Nov. What is Batty doing running PR's in indoor in an Olympic year? Seems like bad management and none of there guys do anything post college as of late.

This is an incredibly ignorant post and the kind of thing one would expect from a jealous Weber State or SUU runner. I've never understood the "little brother" mentality to constantly try and find fault with BYU in order to make one feel better about himself. Weber State and SUU have always done their best when they have focused less on putting BYU down and more on just trying to compete with them.

Eyestone is one of the best in the nation and the multiple national champions and All-Americans he has coached are proof of this. He has done this despite dealing with the very unique challenge of trying to coach guys who have taken two-years off. Dustin Bybee came from a family of really good high school runners who never did anything after college no matter where they went. Dustin had by far the best post-high school career of any of his siblings. Goodwin did well in the face of very unique and challenging trials. And anyone who knows anything about Golden Harper knows that he never had it in him to be a national champion (the guy could never be bothered to show up to practice).

I too ran at BYU. Several guys from my freshman year either transferred, quit, or got injured. It wasn't the majority of the recruiting class, but there were quite a few.

BYU can afford to recruit a ton of guys, knowing most won't pan out. If a few from each class turn out to be something special, that's all that matters. Is this the same at other colleges?

As for Eyestone, I think he's a great coach. But good luck going anywhere as a walk-on. I made the team my freshman year after two-three weeks of training with the team and a couple races. You have to try to impress so much during that time, that you've already peaked and overworked yourself.

Any of you guys who went to BYU, does getting married and having children while still in college contribute at all to runners not panning out? It's not hard to imagine that a lot of people might care somewhat less about school athletics when they have a wife and kid(s).

That can certainly play a factor. I think the combination of the mission and marriage (few guys I knew had kids during college) certainly changes one's focus. It might be different if there were any money to be made in running, but when you're looking to the future and supporting a family, you tend to focus on school/career more than athletics. That is not to say that everyone is in the position or that you cannot focus on multiple things at once.

People really do not understand how hard it can be to come back from the mission both physically and mentally. In my view, that is the biggest factor in guys not panning out.

There is a reason why this message board is looked upon by Real People as what it is. Worthless, Racist, Biased, Stupid. The Ugly nature of those who pretend they are Fans makes the entire site worthless to the masses.

I find it funny that you just jump to conclusions that it must be a Weber or SUU fan. Scared a little?

Ignorant and off the mark on all points. I tried out at BYU several times but never made the team. Despite that, Eyestone was always willing to talk to me and provide coaching tips anytime I dropped by his office. Even though I had little chance to contribute, he still gave me his time and attention.

I'm definitely not jealous of you guys. I respect the level of competition we get from racing your team at meets like Riverside.

There's no argument that you do produce studs over time but those studs have PRs that occur middle of the season then drop off later on. Look at Tylor Thatcher and Rex Shields at regionals for example; 15:0x and 15:3x? They're both studs that should have been able to at least make the time qualifier.

I just feel like that weber/suu comment was a low blow and really not warranted.

"Never made the team" ....then trying to justify what it is like to be on the team? Nice try.
