Find a coach who has over 50% his athletes set one or multiple PRs and has worked with some college-level runners. That is a good barometer of competence in a coach.

Dave Ross (aka nikeman) has an online coaching service that is $350 for a year, $200 for 6 months and can do customized plans starting at $40 per month (if your goal race is less than 6 months away, for example). That's very reasonable compared to what a lot of other coaches charge, but he's not in it for the money.
As for personal experience, he is my coach. He's very good with personalizing training plans to individual goals, abilities and paces. Everyone has been improving.
Do you get a discount?

I suck at math.
Maybe that's why you're too poor too afford both?
Could be. Of course, I know the difference between "too and to" so maybe I should try English.

I've just been of the opinion that if you are going to really go after a goal, get the help of someone who has been successful in guiding others there. In the form of a coach it is literally someone who has likely learned and seen many different roadmaps to success. I go in phases myself and don't get coaching on a regular basis admittedly. But the irony is that many times when I am honed in on a goal and the end result, having someone else guide the training makes the actual process more enjoyable.
I can understand that. But who has he coached? No elites, right? He had one sub-elite guy that was good that left him, but other than that?
I fully agree with your last sentence. My point concerns whether or not it's really necessary to pay $150 a month for that. I mean, Barry Magee is/was? charging $50 a month! (and if that's NZ$, that's even cheaper). And I would assume that guy is straight Lydiard which has obviously helped a lot of people and can use his own Olympic medalist experience to boot.

Look at how much you pay to race.
10k's at $20 - $35
Half Marathons are $30 - $75
Marthons are running $50 - $120 are more.
You wont play 5 cent for a good coach. This is why the usa is slow a** hell. I'm talking about the 5k and up runners in the usa.
I pay about 15 bucks for a 5k, 20-30 for a 10k, 30 for a half and 30-35 for a full.
All with prize money (200 for a 5k, 300 for 10k, 500k for a half and full, though more for bigger fulls).

that should be 500 for a half, not 500k.
Wow, really time to change my name :(
Why do you need a coach? Unless you're a pro and your wage-earning depends on running, but I doubt that's true if you're seeking out an online coach. Even if you're the local fast guy or gal, why would you need a coach? Just to carve 30 seconds off your Turkey Trot time?
Ok, if you're attempting a big goal like the Oly trials, sure maybe. But to qualify for Boston or NY guaranteed? Just run more miles, solid tempos, and read some good books (Pfitzinger, Daniels) and some good articles (Running Times, not Runners World).

I meant www.enduranceproductions.net
Let's just be honest here. If you read a couple good books on training (Daniels, Pfitz, even the old-but-good Lydiard) and just bounce some good ideas off of your fastest running friends, you'll be as good a self-coach as any run of the mill $100 a month internet coach.

I sometimes wondered myself but sometimes after reading many good books and trial/error on your own, you might need extra help help/validation that you can't get from reading books.
I do not do "internet" coaching. I use email and phone calls to work with the runners I coach. I charge a flat $150 per year, yes year. I have a full time job as a programmer that takes care of my living needs, the $150 is your "buy in" to working together. I was Arthur Lydiard's translator during his time in Venezuela in 1974. If you want to improve and are willing to do a "full" Lydiard approach, email me. From there it will depend if we are compatible as athlete/coach. If it does not work out in the first 90 days, no charge. If you are interested, drop me an email.

Wow, that seems absolutely outrageous.
Pay someone to run with you?
That's so sad.
Whoa! That is pathetic. At first I thought it was a spoof like the Onion. Look at this:LET’S GET STARTED $250 ($31.25/run):Getting into the routine of running is the hardest part! Together we will assess where you are in your running lifestyle and begin you on your path. We will run together 2 times a week for 4 weeks.PUSH A LITTLE HARDER $500 ($31.25/run):Not quite a beginner, but need a little push to run longer and faster? We will run together 2 times a week for 8 weeks.GO FOR IT $900 ($25/run):Now that you’ve gotten into your running groove, let’s work towards either a 5 or 10K. We will run together 3 times a week for 12 weeks.

They are the reason, why I we have no speed. I don't need more endurace guys. Why run 100 miles a week and only run a 31:50 10k?
Don't forget...
*charges may be added for extended travel*
*all “runs” include pre and post run stretch*
What?!?
I didn't see they were charging that much for this stuff.
500 bucks for 2 months worth of 'pillow talk'?
