I only add "American born" because I think if I didn't the answer would easily be Lagat, doping allegations aside. My vote is for Alan Webb followed by Dathan Ritzenhein.
People who are saying Lagat obviously can't read. I would like to say Webb but he has never very good form which I think is a big factor in talent. I would go with Andrew Wheating, I think he will be the next AR holder in the 1500/mile in the near future.
Andrew Wheating is a solid pick for sure. Especially since he didn't start running until his junior year I believe. You gotta wonder, what if he had started running earlier...
Webb.
It's Rupp. Has shown much better base 800m/mile speed than Ritz or Hall. Better cross country runner and better marathon potential than Solinsky.
Webb's ups and downs make assessing his true talent difficult.

But not as much 800m/mile speed as Teg. Rupp I think is talented but moreso he has been professionally coached since he was like 14.
I still think it has to be Webb or Hall. Hall's times dominate the US born marathon list. Webb is just a freak but too much of a headcase to ever do anything in big international races.

What?
He doesn't have good form? He ran 3:46!!!
Having good form has nothing to do with "looking good". Form is largely dependent on muscle strength ratios also. So, someone strong like Webb is not going to have the same type of stride as someone like Lawi Lalang.
