He should try to get the A standard in something in addition to the 1500m. He needs to have a back up plan. Spend the rest of indoor running 800s-1000s-1500/mile, try to get the A standard in the 1500m out of the way in spring because that's his event, then hop in a fast 5000m just to have a back up plan when the trials roll along, then he can go back to racing miles or 800s until the trials and go from there.
