Seriously, if the OP is dirt poor, he/she should check out the local food bank.
I may be poor, but I've still got my pride. There's no way I'm gonna go to the food bank or get on food stamps or accept any other kind of assistance. I don't need anyone's help. I've got to do this one for me. For my pride. For my future kids' pride.
RICE. and. BEANS.
When I have grandkids and they ask me 'how I made it through the tough times,' (Although they'll be spoiled little rotten brats, probably, as seemingly all kids are these days, so they probably won't ask or care about my life.) I'll tell them I got up at 5, either went for a run or walked the 1.5 miles through the snow to the gym, went to work, ate 2 egg whites and oatmeal with raisins (also cheap as hell - but nasty. I still eat it, though.), worked all day, posted on LR some during the day, ate RICE 'N' BEANS for lunch, studied for 3 hours after work, then walked the 1.0 miles home, then ate RICE 'N' BEANS for dinner, unwind for 2 hours with the love of my life (glorious setup...anyone?), then sleep. Repeat.
RICE 'n' BEANS make you hard. If you can handle this schedule for the sake of the future, you can handle anything the world throws at you.
RICE 'n' BEANS gets me through the day.
