That event has been great the past 4 or 5 years. Seems like its come down to the wire for a medal every single time. It such a cool way to start the meet and set the tone for the weekend.
That said, I would love to see HC up on the medal stand. They've had some tough years and deserve to see some positive results.
medaling in the 4x8? id say they have an outside chance. definitely will score some points (more then 2). snagging a spot on the podium would be tough, but i wouldnt be shocked if it happened.
all of this change because of a new coach. plus, most of their mid-d guys are young. will be fun to see what happens in a few years from now.

A new coach is the reason they have a 1:54 guy and a couple decent guys backing him up in the 4x8? Who's this new coach? Didn't Kavanagh coach relatively unknown Medeiros to a podium spot last year in the 1000? 2:27 is better than 1:54 any day in my opinion. Seriously who's this new coach?
Ok- so after the last few performances from the weekend, I decided to tally up the league's performance list. Keep in mind a lot of athletes probably won't run every event, and every team is far from having put a concentrated effort into every event-especially relays-so this may very well be far from accurate. I found it interesting nonetheless, so it here it goes.
(From last to first)
8. Holy Cross-7. I'm sure they'll get some more points in the relays, but it may end up being negligible.
7. American-18. Deep performances across the league this winter are really going to hurt the distance-specific crew. The 5000 will be their breadwinner.
6. Lafayette-42. A couple of very talented standouts seemingly won't be enough to crack the top 4. Similar to..
5. Colgate-53. Johnson. Tooker. Johnson. Tooker. Like Lafayette, Colgate could do relatively very well for themselves this year. If one guy is off, however, back down they go.
4. Lehigh-62. Fantastic jumpers and good heptathletes will carry this team. Through the running events they only had 8 points. Where has Mr. Kosgei been?
3. Army-95. Somewhat surprising to be this far back from the first two. Their main weakness comes from being a relatively unbalanced team.
2.Bucknell-171. Losing Mr. Sacks hurts. A lot. His absence may be the difference in a league victory at home or not. Amazingly well balanced team, however; They scored in the most events of any team. We will see if the home field advantage can put them past...
1. Navy-198. The team we all have come to know. Amazingly deep in the distances and relays. It is the standout vaulters, however, that may be what give Mr. Cooksey another trophy on the mantle.
Like I said, I know this is far from accurate, so take from it what you will.
On one hand I would love to see the Bison team win at home-but seeing how half the team and select coaches have been known to talk quite a bit, it becomes easy to root against them. With that in mind, I think I'll be cheering for Navy this year; they are going to protect the country anyway, so I'd hope they win. Hard to root against. Generally classy group. Personal opinions aside, best of luck to all. It'll be a great meet. Cheers.

They won't race at Patriots. They'll both be looking to win "easy". Look for one in the mile and the other in the 1000. I wouldnt be surprised to see Johnson do 1k, 5k and Rome do 3K, mile. They are clearly the class of the league. No offense to Kosgei or anyone else. It would be great to see these guys go at it though, no question.
No 3k massacre at the end of the meet but they are going to throw down right off the bat in the 5k. Wish I could be there. Anyone know if there will be a live feed on the Bucknell website or at least videos on youtube.

I'm "outside" the PL, but I follow its schools with interest--I have friends/colleagues/former students coaching in the conference. And you're right, this can't be a *good* thing for the PL track teams.
[Yeah, I know everybody speculates about bringing in speedy/big guys with football scholarships, then having them do sprints/throws. Not that likely--fb coaches nowadays tend to prevent their scholarship guys from doing t&f (which I know is nuts, but tell *them* that).]
Do Patriot teams engage in a lot of dual/tri/quad meets? Or do they mostly do the dreary "no scoring until conference" routine? (I know that Army/Navy do scored meets, but they're in no danger of dropping t&f anyway--I'm asking about the league's "civilian" teams.) To my mind the lack of scoring meets has been a *major* factor in the dropping of men's track teams in recent years...

This could be good though too. Hopefully the disparity in football talent causes all the PL schools to strip the track programs of any support making it a level playing field. Although Navy, Army and American are never going to have to deal with that stuff. But Bucknell through Holy Cross would be more even. I know a lot of the schools at the bottom of the patriot league dont have much to offer recruits. I know of one school not naming names that has literally nothing. (No scholarships, no loan, no work study, no financial aid academic slots, and also no academic slots for people paying the full admission) So they just basically have walk ons. Maybe I'm just looking for the silver lining.
I think there's a few silver linings for track if the football teams get scholarships. First off the main reason to start giving scholarships is to play more FBS teams. That means more $$$ for the athletic departments. Programs get cut when the athletic departments are losing money, football scholarships will hopefully bring in revenue. If a school like Lehigh gets a chance to play somebody like Penn State, that will bring in millions...and everyone will benefit. Also this is still the Patriot League, so the School Presidents will expect a decent athletic department GPA even with football scholarships. Since awarding scholarships will mean that the football team will get more academically challenged, the athletic departments will need the high GPA from the XC team more than ever. Because of these two factors I seriously doubt any programs will actually get cut.
The big downside that I see is that the athletic directors will demand that their XC coaches recruit only the highest academic achievers, since all they care about will be the team's GPA. This is already happening at a few schools (as was mentioned earlier in the thread) and will only be more pronounced now.
What time is that men's 5k going off? Any updates?

Any feedback on the two questions quoted above?
a) Do the PL t&f programs act like "real" sports, by compiling some kind of a won/lost record during the season, or do they mostly follow the no-score-to-give-to-the-AD route, which seems to have consigned so many t&f programs to oblivion?
b) Any thoughts regarding the women's championship?
[One note: Just over half of the NCAA's 120 FBS programs make a profit from their football team--or, to put it another way, nearly half lose money on football. It's hard to imagine a PSU-type school playing a PL school (except maybe Army/Navy--which don't have big funding problems anyway); and in any case I don't see how doing so would generate "millions" of dollars for the PL team.
[I'd love to think that adding fb scholarships would be a net plus for PL athletic programs, but I have serious doubts that additional income would offset the scholarships' costs--meaning the shortfall would have to come from other teams' budgets...]
